Topic Title: ITCHY!!
| | "ITCHY!!" , Tue 3 Dec 12:37
Started St. John's Wort in August. Emotionally I feel it helps, but have developed very itchy arms and shoulders, and occasionally chest....especially at night. I have tried different brands, and some seem worse than others, but they all make me itch! Has anyone had this reaction?

my skin is so red and itchy!! I have a hereditary skin disorder that cause my skin to welt even if I "scratch with finger tips not nails or thru skin. Ouch. Anyway. the sjw has def. made it worse but I'm trying to hang in on the sjw. Try this: mix some fine sea salt or kosher salt with some olive oil (say 4 spoonfuls salt and one of oil), throw in some esential oils if you have them (citrus will make you smile, rosemary will relax you). Stir it all up in a bowl and then massage the mixture gently all over you while soaking in a warm tub. Not only does it relieve the itch, you'll feel relaxed and good about yourself.

I have a similar itchy problem in the same areas and mostly at night. However, I take sam-e, with great success for the last 18 months. The itchy condition has been with me for about five weeks now.

Good to know I am not the only one with the bad itchy reaction! Before I read your post, I had sort of given up,and called my doctor to make an appointment to be put on a prescription antidepressant. I had gotten really crabby, and knew I needed some kind of help. I did not think about Sam-e....maybe I should give it a try before my appointment to see if I feel better. It could have been the abruptness to which I stopped using SJW. I am just getting nervous about doing all of this without Medical support. I don't want to mess too much with my brain chemistry.

It's quite possible you are having a reaction to hypericin. Hypericin is known to collect in the skin, where some people can experience either a direct allergic reaction to it, or otherwise a light-sensitive rash caused by the breakdown of hypericin.
Does the itching happen under clothing?

HI! Yes the itching happens under clothing. It all started about one month ago, after having been on SJW for 2 months. I tried to rule out other sources of possible irritation by using perfume free detergent, mild soap when showering, and using perfume free lotions, but I get these STRONG boughts of itchiness that are so bad that I am kept awake at night because of them. I was taking 3 tablets of Kira spread thoughout the day, and found that the reaction is not as bad as when I take the Nature Made brand, but still a little itchy. I was not aware of the fact that some people may be allergic to hypericin...hmmm. I like the way I feel on SJW and really don't want to stop taking it, but maybe I will have to.

People can be allergic to almost anything. I'm sorry to hear this is happening and I hope you find a compromise or something else that helps.

Hi,
In reply to feeling itchy, I have had that and I'm totally with you as to how it can totally drive you crazy. Anyhow I put it down to a partitular brand that I was was using of a product. I won't say what sort of product because I think that is irrelivant. I think it is the substance that they have mixed with the product. I think that you will be able to use the same product under a different brand and you will be fine. Admittedly I am still experimenting with this problem myself.
God bless.

Hello and thank you your response. So I am either allergic to hypericin itself, or a substance other than hypericin that is put into the pills. I hope I am allergic to a substance other than hypericin because, if it is true, I can continue to use SJW, but will have to try different brands. Since I first posted, I have stoped using SJW, and the itchiness has pretty much gone away. The negativity seems to have returned, but fortunatley it is not as bad as it used to be. I really appreciate the info. Maybe I will give it another try.
