Topic Title: My experience with Sam-e vs. SJW

Just trying to return the favor here....After taking 900mg of SJW for 4 months, I upped the dosage to 1200mg, and bought Kira, one of the more expensive brands here in the US. After 6 weeks on 1200mg of Kira, and no significant improvement,I just abruptly stopped taking it, and immediately switched to 400mg of Sam-e by Natrol, on an empty stomach. Maybe placebo effect is to blame, but I felt somewhat better the very first day, and at least 25-50% better after 10 days. I can't say I've felt this good and could think as clearly in over 3 years. No side effects whatsoever for me. I read the book on Sam-e called Stop Depression Now, written by Dr. Richard Brown of Columbia here in NY. It's a fantastic guide to how to use Sam-e, and I will continue to monitor my progress to see if I need to up the dose to 800mg per day, which can be done after 2 weeks, according to Dr. Brown. I've also been taking significant amounts of B complex vitamins, essential fatty acids (fishoil, etc), and a multivitamin every day. These vitamin supplement levels were all suggested by a naturopathic doctor here in NY. Anyway, I feel I'm finally on the road to being able to think clearly enough to make some important decisions to improve my overall quality of life. My sense is that Sam-e, if better advertised to its benefits, could easily scare the pharmaceutical companies. Hope this helps someone, like all your messages helped me decide to get involved with Sam-e. Thanks.

I have been on sam-e for 14 months now. I have never felt so normal in my life. Life is actually good. I,also, bought a copy of the book that you refer to. And, the best part is there are no side effects. I just don't understand why more people aren't using sam-e. I started with sjw, and it didn't really do anything for me. Also, since taking sam-e, I feel my depression is easing up. I can now have an occasional Manhattan ****tail with out feeling low when the drink wears off.

What brand and how much are you taking of Sam-e? I've unfortunately regressed somewhat since my Nov 22 post...my only thought is that my previous success could've been attributed to the combo of both SJW and Sam-e at the same time, but now that I'm completely off of SJW for two weeks now, my mood has lowered. Any thoughts? I'm now taking 600mg per day, and am considering 800, per Dr. Brown's book (it's safe to do this).

Hi, Could you please explain a little about Sam-e, or point me in the right direction of an informative web page. I have never heard of it and am always looking for anything that may be helpful. Thanks heaps

I would really just suggest going to a local bookstore and finding the book mentioned in my earlier post. I didn't even buy it, I just sat down in the bookstore and read the relevant chapters. I don't think you'll find that much on it elsewhere. My understanding is that is just increasing certain amino acid levels that already exist in your body, so it's not adding anything that you don't already have, ie, no foreign substances like SJW or traditional antidepressants. It works very quickly, but is a little expensive. For me it's been worth every penny.

Just thought I'd share what prices I've been able to find, in the midwest U.S. At Target, I've found a box of Nature Made, which I've heard is the Best brand, on sale for $14.77, 20 200mg. tablets, with 4 free(what it says on the box), which makes it .62 cents a tablet. At Walgreens, they had a buy one box, get one free, 50 200mg. tablets in each box, each box then costing $20, making each tablet .40 cents. The Kira SJW I bought cost $10.98 a box, or .24 cents each tablet. I guess it depends on how many tablets you have to take, how much it would cost. The Kira worked great for me, took three a day, but I'm quiting it because of some of the side effects which weren't compatable with the light box I use for winter depression(SADs). It seems I only need one 200mg. of Sam-e, every other day during my PMS cycle, and I feel fine. Anyway, are these the kind of prices others are finding, or is it Way more expensive elsewhere??

Those are good prices. I buy sam-e at Vitamin World and the discount price runs me about 31 dollars monthly. I will visit Target. However, sam-e is the best thing that ever happened to me. I love it! It works immediately and I feel more normal than I have ever felt in my lifetime. I highly recommend it.

Oh no! I made a mistake! I reread my post on the prices, and I made a mistake on the mgs. of Sam-e. It's only 200 per tablet, not 400! And I was trying to be sooooo careful! Changing my other post to say the right mg. now! Soooo sorry! So, not such a good price?
