Topic Title: feeling pretty yucky

Hi there,
I've been on SJW for depression/anxiety/OCD for the last 7 months, after a disastrous couple of tries with SSRIs. It helped a bit, but I didn't feel it was enough, so a couple of months ago I added 5htp, starting with 50mg and then up to 100mg.
Again, that helped a bit, but not to the extent I'd hoped for, so I again tried to up the dosage of 5htp to 150mg. It gave me a few nights of very disturbed sleep and anxiety, so I decided instead to cut the 5htp and increase my dose of SJW to 4 x 300mg daily.
This has not worked very well so far, as I'm getting severe headaches, and feel generally pretty crappy, (for want of a better expression) and more depressed than I have for a while. Unfortunately I can't afford to take 4 Kira every day as I would like to, as it's extremely expensive here (£14.95 for 30, which is about $22), so I'm having to take cheaper brands, of unknown quality.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, I think I've exhausted my options on SJW, which is a real shame as I'm extremely wary of going on to prescription meds again (though it would really please my dr). Has anyone any ideas for me?
Thanks for any replies, juju

Hi, Juju. Maybe you could try Sam-e before you go to perscription drugs?? It might be expensive, too, though. The cheapest I've found it was .40 a tablet, got it at Walgreens, a "two boxes for the price of one" deal.

Hi there Juju
I remember a while back you were interested in my experiences on SJW and 5-HTP. I find SJW great but the 5-HTP was useless. Still, worth a try.
Before you have to resort to prescriptions (aaaaarrrghhh! - I've tried Paxil/Seroxat - never again) - could you look into ordering Kira on the internet - might be cheaper to order in bulk from iherb? Or without having to go as low as supermarket brands, can you try some other not too cheap brand in the UK? Doesn't have to be an all or nothing situation?
You may be interested to hear that I've been on a really good SJW brand called Natural Nutrition (in Australia). Because of the way I am though, I could not resist ordering Kira from iherb to try it out. I've been on it for 3 days and don't see much difference. Perhaps it takes a while when you switch brands to notice anything though.
Let me know your thoughts
Suling

Hey, i know the problem of buying SJW in the UK (I'm a student - £45 or whatever a month just on that is jut NOT gonna happen), but buying the unregulated brands may be the problem. Those things generally tend to be very weak. I just found www.healthspan.gg however, which seems to be very cheap and recommended on this site, and is good quality. Maybe try that?

Hi guys:
Just a note about buying SJW in the UK - I hve been taking it on and off for quite a while now and the best brand I found is Quest Viatmins. It is standardised, from an company of extreme repute in the vitamin world and I (and others on this forum) have found that it definately does the trick....it usually startes working within the 4-6 week initial period because the dosage is at the top end of the spectrum for SJW (although you can choose to take less than the 3 tablets a day if you wish, but it will take longer to get into your system).
You can probably find it in most health food shops, but you can also buy it online from the Quest Vitamins website.
I've found that taking it with meals and lots of water is the best way to go.
Cheers
David
PS. Sorry for sounding like an advert for the stuff!!

Hi There,
Thanks everyone for your replies. David - thanks for your suggestion, but I did actually try Quest earlier this summer, without a great deal of success unfortunately, though I know they are a good brand.
My husband bought me another pack of Kira two days ago, and I'm now trying to take 3.5 tablets of those a day. I'm still getting a really weird pressure headache, which feels like my brain is pressing against the top of my head, and some dizziness/vision problems. Hopefully this means it is also doing some good, and will wear off soon.
If using only a 'pure' brand like Kira seems to be working, I will look into other recommended brands on the internet (Epyx mentioned Perika as a really good one) and see what the deal is with shipping costs etc.
I really want this to work, and in fact sometimes I feel much better, but it seems to be a sad fact that depression has become part of my life now, and I can't remember the last time I felt completely 'normal' for any length of time.
Well thanks again, Best wishes, juju
