Topic Title: SJW and Valerian

I just found an article in Psychology Today, March 2000 issue - on St. John's Wort and Valerian. Its a short article and may be up on the web, but, basically it says that one study of 100 patients found that sjw plus valerian works better than valium for anxiety. I have been using both sjw and valerian for anxiety and depression for about a year - so for what its worth - apparently I'm not alone in finding that it helps. One thing, I usually don't use valerian with sjw during the day unless I'm having an anxiety attack because valerian does make me drowsy.. no surprise here as valerian is usually used as a sleep aid. Hope this helps anyone out there with anxiety and depression - just be careful if you take valerian and drive or anything because, like I said, it really does make me drowsy - other than that no problems. Be well, thanks, Leo

That's interesting...I'm on my 3rd day of SJW, and have been taking valerian about 3 weeks now! Can't say I've noticed any drowsiness with the valerian though, maybe it will take longer to get into my system....I'm hopeful though, and really do not want to resort to prescription medication because of the lactose, as I'm vegan. How soon did you feel an improvement Leo?

Hi Max, sjw takes about 4 to 6 weeks to feel the full effect. Different people do react differently - I felt some effect with the very first sjw, but it did take about a month or two before I noticed a big change. As far as valerian, it seems to act in about 15 minutes to a half hour after I take it. I usually only use valerian at night as a sleep aid when I need it. I have found that, when I am having what I call an anxiety attack - similar symptoms to panic attack but it is worry not panic that is the main emotion- that one or two valerian root always seem to put an end to the attack very quickly. Again, the only negative I have noticed about valerian is it makes me drowsy, so I don't take it if I have to drive etc. within a couple of hours after the dose. Otherwise, no problems, Hope this helps, thanks, Leo

Cheers Leo....I have felt a bit better this past couple of days, so I'm hoping to continue! For the first time in 'ages', I felt my creative urges coming back (painting/craftwork)....maybe its because Ive been off sick from work..which is giving me the space I need to 'regenerate'......trouble is, I'm thinking that work stress, is half my problem, and I'm seriously considering a change, now, whereas before, I just thought I'd get better and return to work!Although it's difficult to give up a regular wage etc...its not worth my health!

Max, having been through an 'enron' I can attest to the fact that no job is worth your health. My former employer was bankrupted - after over 110 years in business - by a pack of greedy ceo's and their cronies who took everything and left the workers with absolutely nothing. It was two years of pure hell that almost cost me my sanity, family and life. I was fortunate in seeing the end coming and protecting what I could of my finances, but many, many people were destroyed - some are now homeless 8 months after the ceo's made off with litterally millions of our pensions, wages, benefits - everything. Sorry for the rant - but, first remember NO JOB is worth your health and happiness and Second, thank goodness for sjw and valerian plus the "Anxiety and Phobia Workbook" the combination ofherbs plus the exercises in the book saved my life. All the best, Leo
