Hello everyone: Today is Day 19 since I started taking 3 standardized tablets of SJW. I had been moderately depressed for many months and plagued by severe insomnia, awaking at 3:00AM, and unable to get back to sleep. Then, on Day 7 I was positive SJW had started working (I posted a glowing letter)because I was suddenly able to sleep well and deeply for 7-8 hrs., with rich dreaming. I felt a lot better/more positive, in general. Today, Day 19, I contuinue to enjoy good sleep, yet I feel somewhat blue. Can it be that SJW or any Rx med, for that matter, cannot cure a bleak reality? I live alone and have been on Unemployment Insurance since the 1st of the year AND I'm not presently in a relationship. I have no financial problems, but am very lonely. My daughter and sisters live in other parts of the country and I'm ALONE much of the time. I keep busy by reading a lot and doing research on interesting subjects on Google.com, but I don't know what to do about my my lonely lifestyle. I'm a widow in my early 60s, still shapely and attractive, but have been recently disappointed by men I've met via the Internet. I earnestly seek constructive advice about trying to "get a life" instead of languishing, as a house rat, which I've been doing. I'm seeing a psyciatric social worker once a week at HIP, and he suggests my doing vonunteer work of some kind. Also, is it possible that I'll feel better as more time goes by? It's not even 3 weeks yet. I was so excited on Day 7 when I started to sleep well...I know it must be helping since it's overcome terrible insomnia...My questions are: Since I have partial relief now (good sleep-no need for Xanax),might my mood continue to improve by 4-6 weeks? Also, does anyone take 4 SJW tablets a day with good results? Or, should I try adding 5-HTP for a stronger effect? Is it same to take a 500 mg. capsule of L-Tyrosine along with SJW? My deepest thanks and appreciation to those of you kind enough to respond with your kind advice. Jeanette M.

Jeanette, I am so glad I found this site. When I read your post I felt I was reading about myself. The situation is a little different but the feelings are the same. I too just started taking SJW about 3 wks ago. I am 45 and am going through what I aassume are hormonal changes. a couple months ago I started waking up at night with sweats from these awful emotional dreams. I would be unable to go back to sleep. This problem increase to every night. I have been what is termed an "at home mom" most of my married life. I am not a social being and have always enjoyed being alone. My husband and I are very different and dont do much together.I enjoy my aloneness that is until now. I have this terrible anxiety about being alone and empty. I cant explain it with words. I knew I had to do something though when I felt my time on this earth was completed (if you know what I'm saying). I started taking SJW and within a week I started sleeping through the night without the gut wrenching emotional dreams. After about 2wks I was starting to enjoy being alone again. Today after a little over 3wks I seem to have had slight relapse. That is why I'm at this web site. I dont think I can handle going back to where I was. Has therapy helped you at all. I too am making plans to do some volunteer work but I live in a rural area which makes it difficult to have many choices. I have no one to talk to about this problem. Is this caused by this menopause thing or is it something else? Elizabethe

Hello Jeanette,
It is your Aussie friend here (the one with the chocolate). I too am sorry to hear that you are feeling low, perhaps the social worker is right in suggesting some volunteer work to get out and about and meet some new people. But I know recently when I was unemployed I also stayed at home looking on the internet - it was very comfortable thing to do. I could stay on it all day -but then again I am a very addictive person.
I think also that it took about 10 weeks for the SJW to work for me. I was thinking of coming off it but I changed brands and then it started to work.
Funnily enough, the brand I now take INCLUDES L-TYROSINE! On the label it says it includes 250mg of L-Tyrosine. And each tablet is standardised to contain 666mcg Hypericin, and 6.7mg Hyperforin. I take 3 of them a day. So I would say it is definitely OK to take L-Tyrosine with SJW - perhaps try half of one of your capsules = 250mg....?
I do hope that you feel better soon and keep in touch.
Suling

Sorry for typo - Is it SAFE to take L-Tyrosine while taking SJW? 5-HTP is used with SJW but what about Tyrosine..I used to take several capsules of Tyrosine daily, for depression, but, by itself, it's not as effective as SJW. Thanks for your comments.

Hi Jeanette,
Sorry to hear you have hit a rough patch. From experience, and from what I've read here, it's not unusual to have relapses. Just try to keep in mind that they are only temporary and part of a general upward trend. SJW does not fully take effect for up to 6 weeks, and longer for some people, but the better sleep should help you to feel a bit more positive.
I am taking 5htp with SJW which seems to be more effective for me. The only thing I would say though, is that to start with the 5htp really disrupted my sleep patterns. Having said that, some people actually take it for insomnia! Perhaps you could give the SJW a while longer before you add anything else, or maybe change your brand. I've read on here recently that you should look out for hyperforins when choosing a brand, as they are now thought to be the more active ingredient.
I'm really not sure about L-Tyrosine... I was actually going to post here sometime to ask about it. I know people take it to boost 5htp but other than that I don't know what it's meant to do. Perhaps someone could advise?
Well I hope you start feeling better again soon. You sound like a really positive sort of person and won't let this beat you!
Best Wishes, juju
