Hi all. I am both new to this site, and new to SJW, having just picked some up monday night. I apologize ahead of time if it's against ettiquete to post such a long message here. I've probably been depressed most of my life, from junior high up when I think about it. About 4 years ago it got really bad- suicidal/cutting & all that fun stuff. I still think I kind of enjoy being depressed. That went on for about 2 years before a job change made me think my depression was gone. The weird thing is, I don't spend that much time being 'sad' but I have a bunch of the other symptoms:lethargy, loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities, irritability, disruption of normal sleep pattern, physical discomfort, difficulty thinking or concentrating, thoughts of suicide or death just to name a few. (but the sadness/anxiety has been coming back lately) Around last Christmas, I finally realized I didn't just have to suffer. For some reason it had never occured to me I could do anything about it. So I went to a doctor, and she gave me a prescription for Effexor. I spent the first 3 days in a daze, not sleeping at night at all, all the time reading about it's side effects, and just quit taking it and never went back. So, I've been taking 3x300mg for the last 3 days. It's probably too early to really tell a difference, but I sure have been sleeping well (insomnia has always been a problem). The first symptom I'm looking forward to losing is the irratibility- it sure makes working on a helpdesk tough.

If the sjw doesn't work try 5htp it worked wonders for my depression especially the irritability. I suffered with the exact same symptoms you described and 5htp has helped me tremendously.

Dear Anon: I think it's a very good sign that after just 3 days of SJW you've already been able to sleep better...That means it's having an early effect, so stay with it. It kicked in for me on the 7th day, and I too had excellent relief from insomnia and still do (it's now day 16 for me). Most of us have been on major Rx antidepressants like Paxil, Zoloft, (in my case) Wellbutrin, Effexor, etc. and have been horrified by their various nasty side effects. The wonderful thing about SJW is that there are virtually NO side effects. You'll see. Let us know how you're doing as your body gets used to this wonderful, natural herb. Jeanette
