Hi
I've been suffering from depression since January and have been on venlafaxine up until July when i came off it because it was making me really ill. I was feeling much better until the last couple of weeks and am now feeling really depressed and suicidel again.

I have seen my counsellor today and we have discussed me starting SJW. I'm going to try this even though i am apprehensive because of all the problems i had with venlafaxine. I have also heard of another herbal antidepressant called serotone 5HTP and wondered if any one has heard of this?

I assume Serotone is a brand name? The generic name is just 5-HTP. Your 3 main choices in "herbal" anti-depressants are SJW, 5-HTP and SAMe.

SJW is usually a safe starting point because it has a low side-effect rate and the actual side-effects are quite mild if you do experience them. It's also cheap. 5-HTP is more effective for some people, and can be a logical starting point for people who have previously had success with a serotonin-enhancing drug.

I hope you find relief in whatever you choose to take.
