"Feeling better" , Fri 31 Aug 12:24

I have been suffering from depression for about 5 weeks now. My psychiatrist perscribed Paxil but I am scared to death about the side affects and decided not to take it. I am also taking about 10mg of Ambien to help me sleep. I have been taking SJW for about 4 days now and I am definately feeling better during the day. Still not sleeping well however. Am lucky if I get 2-3 hours of sleep at night. I plan on taking SJW forever if I can feel better. The depression I felt was nothing like I had ever felt before. Except for maybe 1 day or so. I actually walked out to my car during work on Monday of this week and sat in my car balling my eyes out like I used to when I was a child (I am a 33 year old male). That was the day I started taking SJW. Is anybody out there taking Ambien and if so, how long should I take it? I have been taking it for about 5 weeks now. I have had maybe 3 or 4 days where I havn't taken it. Any suggestions.

Hi Bri
i have taken ambien before, 10mg dosage. i split the pill in half and it gives me a woozy feeling but i get in bed right away and fall asleep within a half hour-which is great for me!! I have not experienced a drugged effect the next morning, either. i do feel tired but that is nothing unusual so i don't necessarily attribute it to that. However, now i'm taking kava kava , 5htp and st. john's wort (recommended in a book on Chronic Fatigue/Fibromyalgia). I noticed I was able to fall asleep better right away and don't feel unusually fatigued in the daytime.

Bri I've never taken Ambien but if you're still getting very little sleep after 5 weeks of taking something, I would go back to a doctor and see if something else might work. Also I would go to someone other than a psychiatrist, like a gp. I found my gp to be just as knowledgable about meds and easier to talk to. My experience with psychiatrists (and between me,several friends and family members we've been through many)has been that they are VERY prone to writing out prescriptions without really listening to what the problem is.

As a mother of a 3 year old and 8 month old, neither of whom sleep much at night, I can tell you that sleep is vital in order for a person to function properly. Good sleep is SO important to a person's well being. Once your sleep gets back on track (and it will), you will feel like a new person.

Hang in there with the SJW. It has really helped me feel like my old self again. I too noticed a change in the way I felt very soon after starting on SJW and the feeling only got better. Good luck to you!
