Has anyone had an Asthmatic reaction to St. John's Wart?
I experienced the same reaction to St. John's Wart as I
did to Chamomile Tea and Aspirin. ASTHMA! I first experienced
an asthmatic reaction to Aspirin when I was in my twenties.
At that time I thought it was strange but have since learned
it is considered fairly common now. I always loved a soothing
cup of Chamomile Tea but could never understand why my chest
felt tight and I had difficulties breathing afterward. It's
because Chamomile is in the same family as Dandelion, hmmmmmmm.
Four years ago I tried St. John's Wart by Jamieson, and did I
have an adverse reaction. Same as the Chamomile and Aspirin but
worse. Has anyone else experienced this reaction to St. John's
Wart. Maybe it was the particular brand I don't know. Also
if someone has a Thyroid condition or high blood pressure is it
safe to take St. John's Wart?
One of my daughters is suffering from anxiety and OCD(obsessive compulsive disorder) and has been prescribed Paxil. She doesn't feel well on it at all. The doctor has increased her dosage to 60mgs. If she doesn't feel well on 20mgs. then how is going to feel on 60mgs.? I am contemplating if maybe she should try
St. John's Wart. She doesn't have the same allergies or sensitivities as I do so I think she should be safe with it. Would appreciate any suggestions.

And so it goes and so it goes.

I read on another website (webmd), that SJW is supposed to actually help treat asthma. Also that topical preparations are good for burns and wound and that SJW is good for treating bronchitis. Of course if one is allergice to a product, the asthma information is moot. Again, this was according to an aricle on webmd.

I am interested in your daughter's OCD/Anxiety Disorder. My son has had the same difficulties. He took Anafranil (antidepressant) for about 1 1/2 years with some moderate improvement. The doctors REALLY wanted to give him Prozac, but I refused. He's been medication free for about 1 1/2 years now, but still has milder bouts with OCD/Anxiety (I think as he is now a young he has learned to "cover" in front of people too). Since Prozac was the doctor's of choice for OCD/Anxiety for my son, we've talked and decided to try SJW! We are going shopping for some together this weekend. He is very positive about the possibilities as he always d the notion of being on "psychiatric medicine". Wanted to hide it from friends, etc. He likes that this is a natural herb that he can buy in the vitamin aisle, not an RX . We will post in a few weeks about his results. Please let us know how your daughter does also.

A P.S. here.....I was a long time sufferer of anxiety/panic attacks. I, too, was suggested Prozac by my psychiatrist. I had already tried Tofranil with horrible side effects! I refused the Prozac out of fear and lack of knowledge. Fortunately Inderal and Klonopin turned out to be just the right combo for me. It is noteworthy to know that I was told by several psychiatrists that antidepressants work very well in treating anxiety/panic/OCD. They have even admitted to me that science doesn't know WHY antidepressants work....they just do! And Prozac is one of the favorites they prescribe.....hence SJW might be the answer for some. Sorry so long winded. My first time on and it feels good to have folks who understand about these things to talk to. You can feel quite isolated! Thanks again!

I am not aware that I have had any asthmatic reaction to taking St. John's wOrt. SJW has been helpful for anxiety but I haven't heard of it being used specifically for OCD. There is a SSRI medication in the same family as Paxil called Luvox that is taken for OCD and anxiety.
