I've done a bunch of research into hyperforin, specifically 5572 blend which is found in Nature's Way Perika, and some other blends.

A 10% hyperforin brand is tough to accomplish. I am curious as to where New Chapter gets theirs. The constituent itself is highly unstable and has very rapid breakdown once exposed to air or slight temperature and humidity changes.

I am a firm believer, based on the many clinical references that are available for SJW, that hyperforin plays only a part in its antidepressant effects on the serotonergic system. I think hypericin along with some other phytochemicals, play just as a big a part.

I will admit, however, that many of the studies done in humans contain hyperforin standardizations (but this may be because the same company provided the hyperforin for most of these studies).

I would be curious to see any research the SC27 might have regarding their formula and stability of their hyperforin.

I am sure, though, that since it is a New Chapter blend, they took the time and effort to verify that their product claims can be backed up. I love the company, and I love what they are doing for the dietary supplement industry.

If i was going to try an SJW blend again, I suppose I would try New Chapter and give the 10% hyperforin a chance. Not a big risk at $18 a bottle.

Hi Ron

Thank you for your reply but i dont think
you do much research on this stuff.
Just do a google on (CO2 38%Hyperforin)

And you will see some very potent extracts.

Hyperforin is the most active part cause they
do studies and the more hyperforin the more
active it is on people.

Bud,

I performed a search on google as you indicated and came across the following site, which was listed #1: http://www.realage.com/Health_Guides/herbs/topics/topicContent.asp?topic=114

The study on 38% hyperforin, performed in rats, simply reinforces my point regarding other phytochemicals playing a role in the effects of the SJW plant.

"These and various other observations made during the study confirm that although the antidepressant action of hypericum extracts depends on their hyperforin contents, their spectrums of central activity are due to other component(s). Our working hypothesis that hyperforin and serotoninergic mechanisms are involved in the therapeutically observed antidepressant activities of hypericum extracts is in agreement with these observations."

There are numerous other phytochemicals at work, namely hypericin and various flavonoids. Hyperforin content may play a very important role in the plant's effectiveness as an antidepressant, but may not be the sole determining factor in how well it works in real life.

The second study at the Real Age website, which is mentioned above, was performed by Jerry Cott, who is an expert at phytochemical medicines working for the Pharmacologic Treatment Research Program at the NIMH and is responsible for some meta reviews of SJW and other antidepressant natural meds. He concluded in this study, that a crude extract of SJW exhibited effects on numerous systems in the CNS and suggested that "These data are consistent with recent pharmacologic evidence suggesting that other constituents of this plant may be of greater importance [great than hypericin] for the reported psychotherapeutic activity." This lab test actually came before the many hyperforin studies that have been performed up until this point, but again, they suggest that multiple constituents are at work.

Here is a laboratory study with some specifics regarding the flavonoids: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=12770617

This link is a review of the known mechanisms of action for the plant based on available research: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=12775192&query_hl=12

This review discusses tests that were performed with the constituent adhyperforin: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=11518066&query_hl=16

There are some more reviews available at that PubMed website as well. Great information and all of the latest research is usually published there.

I wasn't trying to knock the New Chapter brand. I love New Chapter, in fact, my grandmother uses their nail, skin, hair supplements daily. I am merely suggesting that maybe hyperforin isn't all SJW has to offer.

All of the human clinical trials that have shown positive SJW results utilize a Hyperforin or Hypericin extract. I would be curious to see how well a naturally grown SJW plant with a 3% natural hyperforin content would do in human clinical trials. Personally, I would venture to guess that there would be some positive effects in trials lasting from 4 - 12 weeks.

What if Hyperforin is just HYPE-rforin? How else do you sell a supplement worth $4 - $5 for $20 - $40 ?

Have a good one.

Rod
