"Rollercoaster on Perika?" , Sat 13 Aug 15:45:

Has anyone else experienced inconsistency -- a mix of good and bad hours or days -- on Perika? Have been taking this since about March of this year. Have tried both lowering and increasing the dose, taking it throughout the day, then in the evening only. I've had very good times -- a few hours or days when I felt well and stable. Really as well as I've felt on any prescription medication. Then I am down again for no reason that I can see other than an inconsistent response. I'm very low energy and irritable on down days.

Am not sure what to do at this point. I feel as though I need a mood stabilizer, but have no medical insurance and am not in a position that I can afford medical care in the states. Any ideas are welcome. Thanks.

I've had the exact same trouble with Perika. I tried it for 4 months last year and had to quit because of the emotional rollercoaster it put me on. I tried it again recently with the same result. I've also noticed that products with less hyperforin/more hypericin tend to have a mellowing effect. However, I don't like to fall asleep or be zoned out at work. I'm going to try Kira and see if it gives me a more balanced results.

I finally decided I needed to try something else, and switched to HBC Protocols. It's working great for me. Like the stability, feeling of increased energy/motivation without feeling agitated. If you find Kira doesn't suit you HBC might be an option -- standardized for hyperforin and hypercin and well researched. I wish there were a quick and easy way to find the best brand for each of us. Unfortunately we all seem to be left with trial and error.

I had the same experience. Perika worked at first a little and then quit. If I started a new bottle, it might work a bit for a few days and quit again. I finally quit Perika and started New Chapter brand once a day (10% Hyperforin) about 3 weeks ago. So far, it seems to be working much better and more consistently.

I am using a brand called Flora, which was the high end brand at the local health food store (Canadian). It has only been a few weeks but seems to be working great. After reading various postings on this board I ordered perika on-line but have not tried it yet. I was wondering if anyone else has tried Flora and what you thought of it compared to Perika or others??
Thanks

I have been using Perika for over a year now and am having the same kind of experience.
It definitely does help, but how much seems to vary quite drastically.

I am thinking of trying another brand that has a fixed Hypericin content.
There have been suggestions that different people need more Hypericin or Hyperforin, so it is possible that variations in this create the fluctuations we are seeing (Perika only guarantees Hyperforin content).

Of course it is also possible that is just fluctuations in our brain chemistry.

Luvwombat --
Just posted the reply below to your posting in the general forum before I saw this message, and am copying it below for those following this thread...

Same situation here. Inconsistency all over the place, even witin a single day. I'm also taking some multivitamins, a minimal omega-3 fish oil supplement, and ginkgo biloba. I had tried varying doses of Perika and varying times of day. I was experiencing daytime fatigue, and decided to increase the ginkgo to 240 mg. per day (half in the morning, half evening). This is an allowable dosage, but twice the standard recommended 120 mg. per day, and I would not recommend this for everyone at all. When I increased the ginkgo I started re-experiencing all the side effects I had previously had with Perika. I cut back the Perika, currently one 300 mg. tablet at night, and am feeling much better -- knock on wood. This combination seems to be helping me with low level depression I'd experienced constantly, also recurring more severe depression. I attribute the improvement to the increase in ginkgo, in conjunction with Perika which has been helpful, but frustrating. My main problem with Perika has been inconsistency, and I wouldn't be surprised if I had to bump the dose down or up again. I've experienced this to a lesser extent with some prescription antidepressants, but it seems much more obvious with Perika. I'm inclined to think it's an individual reaction rather than inconsistent batches, but don't know. Have thought HBC Protocols might be an alternative, but have not tried that, and am doing reasonably well at the moment, so am hoping this continues.

I have just posted this in a number of different threads but figured if it is at all helpfull, it might be worth it, anyways, my personal experience with brands:

For the last few years I have also been frustrated with brands in Canada: as with many other brands (besides Kira) I have tried: I would try a brand that would seem to give good results and then a subsequent batch (new bottle) would give very different and negative results, like feelings of irratibility, nervousness, tiredness, and just an all in all weird 'out of it' type feeling; for people who have tried many different brands, I'm sure you know what i'm talking about: where the SJW seems to have many more negative affects than possitive.
I had used Kira early on in my SJW experience with excellent results, so when I suddenly couldn't find it in stores any more I was quite dismayed. I have used various brands within the last year or so, and although some of them seemed good to start with I have not found one that is consistently good (like Kira was when I used it for over a year); thinking that maybe it was related to individual batches I purchased 5 bottles with the same LOT# of Natural Factors SJW, but still had extremely varied results: I was doing good and it seemed to be working well and litterally days after changeing bottles I would feel really wierd and out of it and whatever else, I could just tell that something wasen't right and after having similar experiences in the past, I knew what was going on.
Eventually, I decided to try to obtain Kira no matter what, and ended up (after doing some serious research into online companies) ordering 6 packs of Kira (45 pills each) from IHerb.com. Price was very good something, like $7US a pack and $20 flat rate for shipping. Supprisingly, I recieved the package at my door only 2 days after placing the order, and have now been taking 2 Kira a day for the last few days and it has been making a huge difference (especially since quitting taking any SJW for almost a week due to poor quality/reaction to last batch of Natural Factors).
Anyways, I'm not trying to promote any retailer or anything, all I'm saying is that for a long time I didn't revert back to Kira, a brand I had experienced with consistently good results, only because it was not available in stores in Canada and I was unwilling to order it online/from the states. But now it seems to be relatively cheap and very fast to get, and by far Kira seems to miles ahead of any other regular brand, so for me this will be the way to go!
