"Good results with Kava Kava for SAD" , Thu 14 Jul 01:21:

Hey,
Just wanted to share something that might be useful to someone else struggling with this. I have social anxiety disorder and I discovered that Kava Kava really helps me a lot.
After doing some reading online I decided to try it so I went to a local health food store and bought a bottle. That night I took two pills and then I took two more in like an hour. WOW! When it hit me I was feeling like Snoop Dog but without the pot :-)(sorry).
Next morning I went on a camping trip and I took three pills then later on two and another two I think. WOW! I felt really good and it took away most of my SAD symptoms. I felt awesome, clear headed and in control and my confidence soared.
Bottom line:
-It kicks in about half an hour after you take it(empty stomach)
-If you take it on a full stomach it will take longer to kick in and the effects won't be so great.
-For full effect take higher doses than what it says on the bottle.
And finally, I AM NOT ADVERTISING!, but I feel like I have to share the brand that I got results with(actually the only brand of Kava that I ever used). It's GAIA HERBS, Lyquid Phyto-Caps (capsules with liquid in them for better absorbtion).
I don't take it daily because I am trying Amoryn right now to see if it has any effect for SAD, and they say that high doses of Kava Kava can be toxic on the liver. So I only keep it for occasions, like a social gathering or a job interview or whatever, but I found that it works and it works well!
I hope this benefits someone in some way.
If anybody got good results with this or something else please share.
Peace

Where did you order the GAIA Herbs (Kava Kava) from?

That is very good to hear your experience with Kava. I am looking to buy a brand that is maybe more potent or better quality than the one I had. I think I used Vitamin Shoppe's brand, but felt I needed 3+ caps (75mg kavalact. each). Though, I think it did have an effect on me, it wasn't real noticeable. But, it helped with my social anxiety for sure.

I looked up the brand you mentioned and it seems quite expensive...something like $22 for 60 caps (75mg kavalact.). I was thinking of trying Physician Formulas by Rah Sahelian -- though for some reason it's sold as 750mg with 10-15% kavalactones (which equals 97mg). Anyway, I am curious about brand differences and wonder if anyone else has a good recommendation. What do you think about some of the stuff out there directly from the South Pacific?

I've tried the really pure stuff you buy online and make into a really sick tasting drink... that just makes you really really stoned, sedate and maybe a bit euphoric. They drink it in the pacific instead of alcohol.

I tried it a while back combined with SJW thought it was great. Went back to buy some more to be informed it is BANNED in the UK, can cause irreversable liver damage ! Sorry to rain on the parade ! They must have had some evidence to go so far as a total ban ! I was disappointed but I wouldn't take it now. Pity cos it helped me to sleep too !

I think its been banned for all the wrong reasons.

Most people are aware that there is currently a very controversial ban on the sale of Kava kava in the U.K (althought there remains some confusion over wether the ban includes Wales.)

Kava-Kava was banned following reports that 81 people taking it, (often in very high doses), out of an estimated 250 million users worlwide suffered adverse effects, though the link has not been proved.

Researchers say that in nearly all cases the adverse effects have not been definitely attributed to Kava-Kava and in most cases were associated with liver damage from alcohol or pharmaceutical drugs. Ralph Pike, Director of the N.A.H.S says: "Any risk from a herbal product should be investigated, but the Government has over-reacted. To ban products containing Kava-Kava because of the very low incidence of unproven risk is disproportionate and unacceptable when products such as alcohol, tobacco and even peanuts are all more harmful but are freely available. "

A proportionate measure to protect consumers using this herbal remedy that has been relied upon for thousands of years would be to apply warning labels, as our industry voluntarily did recently with St John's Wort, another well known herbal remedy.

It's no surprise therefore, that there have already been several attempts to overturn the ban in the High Court, the World Health Organisation is reportedly considering the legallity of the ban and H.R.H The Prince of Wales has even had a letter published in the Daily Telegraph in support of Kava kava.

There are some supplemets that conatin both Kavalactones & SJW combined

Interesting to note that after Seroxat has appeared 3 times on BBC1's Panorama (due to its side effects of 'head shocks. tingling feet, orgasm disfunction and even suicide once stopped), it seems odd why is has become so difficult to get Kava to date ?

I should point out that Kava and alcohol dont mix. I think its easier for some governments to ban kava than it is to ban alcohol (a depressant) or seroxat (due to corporate pressure)
