Hi Everyone,
This is my first post here. I just began taking 5 HTP for depression and anxiety and at 150 mg a day I began having the same sexual side effects as the SSRI's gave me. It's not total inorgasmia, but almost. I was hoping that 5 HTP wouldn't do that to me. Anyone else have that experience and do you have any suggestions for me? I have moderate depression and felt I needed to take the 50 mg/ 3 times a day as that's what most books/sites are saying. HELP!!

I think I've been more sexually unhibated(sp) on it. I believe this is because I don't have much anxiety and worry about what other people think. I take the Natrol brand which only suggest taking one 50 mg pill a day which is what I stick to. I just noticed I was a little freer and open sexually towards someone than I think I would have been normally. It's not a bad thing but I just felt like I acted different than my usual self in the situation. That's the only thing I've noticed at this point.

I am taking 5-HTP 200mg a day. I am not seeing any sexual sideeffects, although i didn;t engage in it for sometime. lol!
I am taking for social anxiety and i may have little depression. You can reduce the dosage to 100mg per day and see how it goes. Also. are you taking any other medication like sjw etc..If so you may have to reduce it to 50mg per day.

I'm not taking SJW or anything else that boosts serotonin. I'll try the lower dose of maybe 100 mg a day and see how that goes. I am taking Wellbutrin, but that's not affecting the sex life.

I thought most of the non-herbal anti-depressents like wellbutrin, paxil, zoloft, effexor have sexual side-effects and herbal ones do not have. But in your case it seems to be a reverse. Are you sure wellbutrin is not causing the side effects. But i believe you when you said you didn;t have sideeffects with wellbutrin which means it only started after you started using 5-HTP. If that is the case, then you may use a lowest dosage of 50mg or little higher dosage of 100mg and see how it effects..
PS: i am not an expert, but i would just try different dosages with herbel medicines to determine what is right for me. Also, pls consult a doctor if i tis ok to take 5-HTP with Wellbutrin, usually mixing of these types of drugs is not recommended.

Wellbutrin is not an SSRI. It targets dopamine and norepinepherine, not serotonin.
Wellbutrin is generally without sexual side effects. In fact, many people report *increased* libido and sexual satisfaction on Wellbutrin.
Effexor targets serotonin and norepinephrine. I do not know if it usually has sexual side effects or not.
Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft are SSRI's, targeting serotonin specifically.
