Topic Title: Does Perika lose Potency After Bottle Opened?
| | "Does Perika lose Potency After Bottle Opened?" , Wed 18 May 19:37
Has anyone else taking Perika experienced this: I've been taking Perika for a couple months now. A few weeks ago, it seemed to be progressively losing effectiveness. I started a new bottle a couple days ago and voila, it started working great again. I have to believe this is more than coincidence. Is it losing potency after being opened and exposed to air and light for a couple weeks, or is there a difference in strength from one batch to the next?

I have noticed this exact behaviour, with the new bottle seeming more affective but losing it shortly after. I have started keeping the cotton-wool in the bottle as this reduces the amount of air circulating on the pills. This seems to have made a bit of difference but it is hard to be sure.
I have also noticed that the results are not consistent, which could be to do with batches or with my own chemistry changes.
I have tried reducing the dosage, which seems to help sometimes, and increasing it at others times. It is kind of tricky to decide when to take a full dose and when to take less.
I have also experimented with different doses at different times and recently went back to the breakfast/lunch/dinner schedule which seems to work best right now.
Perika is definitely helping but it does seem to have lost some of it's affectiveness and sometimes it seems to be doing nothing.
I am looking not to try another brand and see if I get a more stable result.

Did any of you Perika users experience insomnia and restlessness while you were adjusting to it? I am about 12 days into it and feel quite strange. Really really really want it to work. Crambert

Crambert -- Yes, I experienced insomnia and a myriad of other side effects, all of which have disappeared or improved over time. I really want this to work too, and it's helping. I no longer experience the type of insomnia where I can't initially get to sleep -- this was something I had not previously experienced to any extent, and seemed to be an initial side effect of Perika -- but still wake in the middle of the night and am unable to get back to sleep, a problem of many years. Perika seems to be helping with that as the quality of sleep I get seems to have improved, and the time I am awake is sometimes less.
Something odd I experienced with Perika is that it caused an initial increase of energy during the day -- needed that, but over time that changed to inconsistency and daytime fatigue at a full dose, initial improvement at a lower dose but over time that was not enough to help with mood. I am gradually, to avoid side effects, moving my entire 900 mg. dose to night-time to help with daytime energy, and that has been a good move at this point -- tonight will be my first night with the whole dose at night (currently 750 at night and 150 in the morning) so I won't know the full effect for a while, but so far so good and, like you say, I want this to work. Am much, much better than I was when I began taking this, about March of this year(?). Still residual problems which I want to get rid of -- primarily energy and motivation.

FMckay, Thanks so much for your reply as I was wondering whether or not to continue. Got some questions. How would taking it all at night improve energy in the daytime? (It makes sense to take it all at once as most pharmaceuticals are taken only once a day and this is compared to the pharmaceutical paxil.) Also, how are you getting it into the 750 mg range as my tablets are 300 mgs? Are you breaking them up? What are the effects/improvements you have noticed since getting adjusted? I am looking forward to the better quality sleep. I really appreciate any info as I am wanting very much to improve functionality here and have some "quality of life.". Crambert

I have a pill splitter, purchased at Wal-Mart, which I use to cut the pills in half. I'm not sure why taking the full dose at night helps except that I've read that serotonin and cortisol levels vary throughout the day. That variation might not be normal in some cases of depression, and maybe that is why a night-time single dose helps some individuals. Keep in mind that response to any antidepressants, sjw included, can vary from individual to individual, so there's trial and error involved here.
As far as improvements go, when I began taking this I was having very bad sleep problems with early morning wakening. That has improved. I was deeply depressed in the mornings. I have what is known as psychotic depression. Several years ago the voices I was hearing at that time told me to kill myself, and I had a suicide attempt. It has been some time since I've had full-blown hallucinations -- they seemed to ease to a manageable level with time -- but have frequently experienced suicidal urges -- a very unsettling and eerie feeling to me -- hate it. This was happening again, and stopped on stable doses of Perika. My mornings have improved to a vast extent. It is sometimes difficult to get up, but after even ten minutes, or maybe less, I am fine. No horrible moods. My energy level has vastly improved, but is still a problem. I was literally immobilized. Somehow I would manage to get to work -- I fortunately, given the circumstances, work part time on an on-call basis -- but at home I could not do anything. You would not have believed the mess in my house. I have managed to clean the house and keep it in a barely passable state -- still have problems getting myself going. That is my major problem right now. I don't feel particularly fatigued, but just can not seem to push myself to accomplish what I see needs to be done and what I want to do. But overall I am better. I have no insurance, have been on a mood stabilizing medication in the past, a myriad of antidepressants combined with antipsychotics, counselling, with very few medications giving any positive results at all, and those were short-lived. So I feel I've been rescued, if only partially, and am very grateful to Kelly and this forum. Yes, quality of life is important.

I take Perika and come to think of it I have noticed that it gains and loses effectiveness in ups and downs....one week I'm wide awake after 4 hours of sleep and the next week I'm sleeping 12 hours every night. The first day I tried it it was amazing and then after that it declined....I'll be starting another bottle soon so I'll report back....they do say that hyperforin is quite unstable so you could well be right!

I've often seen it said on here that different batches, even different bottles within the same batch can produce varying results.
It may be that if a particular bottle is less potent it takes a few days for the effect to become noticeable, so it may seem like it is 'going off'.
If deterioration of the product over time is a factor then shelf life is probably as relevant as anything.
I use Perika and always check the 'use by' date on the bottom of the container. My current batch is 12/2007, which means it is probably a recent (and therefore 'fresh') batch. If it was to say 08/2005, in all probability it will have been stuck on the shelf for quite a while and I suppose there is the possibility that it might have lost some of its effectiveness.
