Topic Title: St. John's Wart or Zoloft?
| | "St. John's Wart or Zoloft?" , Sun 31 Oct 07:10
I am a college freshman and as soon as I started college, my depression has seemed to take the best of me. I never considered myself "depressed" but I also wasn't the happiest kid in high school, but I was at home. Now in college, reading and papers and exams take the best of me. Last week, I realized I needed to start on something because I can't feel this way for the next 4 years. I started taking St. John's Wort, but I got fed up with it after a week because I didn't feel different (then again I don't know how I feel). On Friday I went to the health center and got prescribed for Zoloft. Yesterday, I took my first pill. I woke up this morning feeling absolutely horrible and I wonder if it's because I stopped the St. John's and began Zoloft. Should I not do Zoloft? Should I jut do St. John's? I don't know what to do. I'm having such a hard time making this decision.

It takes 6 to 12 weeks for you to feel the full benefits of SJW. The short time you took it wasn't long enough to judge it's effectiveness. You must not take the SJW and the Zoloft at the same time. Zoloft kicks in at about 2 weeks. It think it depends if you want immediate relief or willing to wait a few weeks for the SJW to kick in.

I just don't know what to do. I know it's my decision, but it's tough. I never thought I would go on depression medication, but it does run in my family. My father was a on a depression medication in his early 20s. My grandmother has been on Zoloft for over 30 years.

Zoloft is a very fast acting medication in that, you can feel withdrawl effects if you take it even as little as an hour late. This may be an issue since it will be hard to take it the exact time everyday. What are withdrawl effects? well i took effexor xr which lasts longer in your system that zoloft. When i missed a dose, as soon as 2 hours later i felt this dizzy feeling, tingling in my legs etc. I hear Zoloft is the same and Paxil is the worst for this. Prozac is said to be "long lasting" in your system so you wont feel this effects as fast. St. Johns wort does not have any withdrawl effects at all, from what I hear. I think it may be the "safter" route. I felt the same depression when i started University. It was hard. I Hope you all the best, and If you want to keep trying the st. johns wort, it may be a good idea, but it is up to you. Also, since you have already begen the zoloft, it may be hard to just stop it. Ask your doctor and see, you may have to tapper off of it to avoid the withdrawl effects i mentioned above. If you do encounter them, do not lose hope, they will go away. The sooner you stop it the less liklihood of a big withdrawl, if any. Hope this helps...good luck no matter which one you chose. :)

I was on Zoloft for only a few days and hated it. It made my brain feel like I had electric zaps taking place, almost like a power surge. I quit and switched to Perika. Perika takes a couple of weeks to feel the full effect but well worth it. Been on it for 1 1/2 years now. No side effects.

Also, I forgot to mention, take Perika with food. It works better if you have something in your stomach.
