Hypericin refers to the chemical found in the whole st. johns wort plant (flower) which most research indicates is the chemical responsible for it's antidepressant/antianxiety effects. Actually, there is a new chemical, hyperforin, which is now thought to be more responsible for st johns wort's beneficial effects. I think its safe to say that most research indicates that both are the major active constituents of st johns wort. Most brands are standardized for hypericin. Standardized just means that the company certifies that .3% is the amount in each dose. Therefore, of a 300mg capsule, 90 mgs would be hypericin. The rest would be other chemicals found in the flower that probably play a role in the supplements effects but have not been proven too. If the brand isn't standardized, then the quantity found in each capsule is less consistent and reliable. I hope this answers your question.
