Topic Title: how to get off paxil???
| | "how to get off paxil???" , Sat 20 Mar 21:53
I have been taking paxil for 6 years, and I seem to find trouble with just about all of the people around me. So I have decided to GET OFF OF THIS STUFF! I take 30 mgs a day, and now the Dr. put me on wellbutrin too. So now I have been taking it for about 3 months. I stopped taking wellbutrin today! Now I have to find away to slow down on paxil, not sure how much I should cut down to at first. Tried to go cold turkey a couple of years ago, and became very suicidle. Any suggestions? I'd ask my Dr. but I would trust any of you before trusting another Dr.

Hi, I took Paxil (Seroxat here in the UK) for 5-6 years. I wholly recommend tapering your withdrawal. Reduce the dosage over a period of MONTHS and not weeks. I really DO NOT recommend doing it cold turkey. My Doctor told me to reduce over a two week period - Big mistake! It wasn't the actual withdrawal that was the problem for me, although I did suffer the brain "zaps", dizziness, etc. It was the after effects of taking this drug for so long that caused greater problems - anorexia, anger, mood swings and an inner seething rage that I still don't know what I was raging at! And I just felt so ill all the time.
My Doctor told me I was still suffering with depression and kept urging me to take another SSRI. She sent me to hospital to have various tests done but they wrote me off with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. 11 months later I gave in to my Doctor and started taking Effexor XR. Oh WOW! Big mistake number 2! After 8 months on that I found a web site that saved my life and I realised that I wasn't crazy. I then started researching SSRIs and read as much as I could find about these drugs and other people's experiences and how they came off them.
It helped me so much. I was able to plan my withdrawal and I knew exactly what to expect. But what was the biggest help for me was finding the answers to the year of hell I went through after coming off Seroxat. It would have been so much easier for me if I had known then what I later found out. I would not have had to endure the Effexor "experience"!
The link to the site that "saved" me doesn't work anymore but below is another site that does. As you have found this site though, I assume that you may have already found some Paxil related sites. Please found out all you can as this will really help you if you know what to expect and what can help reduce the effects of withdrawal.
Good luck.

Please do some research to find out what others have gone through as it will prepare you for it and help you plan it. There are some excellent web sites (like this one)

Hi I have been on site after site trying to figure out if Paxil is my problem. I have been on it for approx. 3 years. I was put on it for heart palputations. and now I am a nervous wreck with so many problems. If I would have known this I would have rather suffered alittle with some palputations once in awhile. anyway. I went off paxil a few months ago and made it through the withdrawl hell. I had it all almost. well I went a whole 40 days feeling better than ever. then day 41 I wake up a nervous wreck could not breath, tired could bearly even walk. went to emergency center and my ekg was ok they sent me home with valium and prescription for zoloft. went to my doctor the next day she put me back on paxil i threw out the zoloft. any way I am back on it for a few weeks and it is no helping I think it is actually making me more depressed and anxious. I just wanted to hear from someone anyone who has had similiar problem. my doctor now wants me to go on something with an x since paxil is not working. any help or comments would be appreciated.

Well, I tapered off Paxil very slowly. It was hard and I had a lot of brain shocks and weirdness but I got through it. I tapered by 5 mg every few days and then by 2.5 mg every few days after I got down to 10. One Dr I talked to said he thought that was a bad idea though because it was just drawing out the withdrawal (like when I took it I would feel better immediately afterwards, then withdraw from that dose until the next day when I took another). But I didn't notice any affect like that. Some might say the best approach is to go cold turkey. But don't do that if you think suicide is a risk. You just have to remember that it will end and you will get back to normal. I forget what the "half life" is of Paxil, try to find that out and that could help you make a good decision as to how fast to taper. Good luck.

I came off Seroxat (Paxil) cold turkey, but started on SJW immediatl y on the advice of my psychiatrist. Worked for me - it wasn't nice, but manageable.
Good luck
