Hello all-
I currently take effexor, and it has noticeably helped my panic and anxiety problems, but I am beginning (after about six weeks of taking it)to experience some extreme muscle tenseness, especially my jaw (it gets so bad that my head stings and my ears get plugged). This tenseness is in addition to some blurry vision, and when I wake up during the night strange streaking and silveryness in my vision (I have had this since I began taking effexor). So I want to switch to SJW- I was thinking amorcyn (I found this sight by researching amorcyn)- has anyone else done this? What is Sam-e? Does anyone recommend any brand highly? And has anyone else ever had side effects like mine while taking effexor or any other anti-anxiety anti-depression medication?

I took Effexor for a short while. In my experience, even in small doses (37.5mg), it is far, far more powerful than SJW. All of the SSRIs for me are more powerful than SJW, but like you and many others, I hate their many annoying and never-ending side-effects. I would wait until the Effexor is out of your system before starting on SJW or SAM-e. I have been taking the New Chapter SJW off and on for the past few months. It gives me mild anti-anxiety/anti-depressant relief, and works quickly because the daily dose is concentrated in one capsule. SAM-e also worked for me, but like SJW, mild in comparison to SSRIs. SAM-e is more stimulating for me (Wellbutrin-like) while SJW tends to be more fatiguing (Celexa-like). I have experienced no real side-effects from either SJW or SAM-e. If you want to learn about SAM-e, you might want to check out Richard Brown's book STOP DEPRESSION NOW.

On the Effexor side-effects, mine were not exactly like yours, but equally disturbing, I think. Effexor, while it did relieve my anxiety/depression/tendency toward panic, also gave me horrible headaches, made me always slightly nauseated, made my hands and feet numb every night, and upon, going off it after a week, gave me those wondeful electrical shock like withdrawal symptoms that everyone always talks about. Never had those types of extreme side-effects on Celexa, Prozac, or Wellbutrin, all of which I took for over a year. Good luck and hang in there!

Chris

I've had great success with the Perika brand (300 mg x 3 times a day). I also take fish oil capsules (Spectrum brand) and 50 mg 5HTP before bed. It took seven weeks, however, before I experienced the benefits of this regimen.
