anyone who combined celexa and 5 HTP? celexa is increasing my apetite and i tried 5 HTP before to control it. 5 HTP does work- even 50 mg a day- to control apetite but when i used it with celexa my mood changed and i got depressed so i dropped 5 HTP in 3 days. maybe it was just a coincidence, i don`t know.
any ideas? can 5 HTP cause depression when taken along with SSRIs?
thanx

5 htp is the precursor to serotonin - which means it will help produce serotonin in your body. Too much serotonin is said to cause problems (serotonin "poisoning") and most everything I have read suggests you do not take 5htp when taking an ssri. Others may disagree but I would recommend doing a little more research before you try taking the two together. You could try talking to a Dr or pharmacist but they may not know much about 5htp (mine didn't) and they are not always pro natural methods of healthcare.

Best,
Denise

I went off Celexa about 5 weeks ago, while it worked great for the depression, I gained weight (only 8-10lbs but still!) and my appetite was out of control. I am going to start SJW. I asked my doctor about 5HTP and she said it can cause liver damage and to stay away from it. Who knows for sure, but thought I'd share my experience.

I wish you luck. Hang in there!
