Topic Title: Effexor xr withdrawls are driving me crazy!!
| | "Effexor xr withdrawls are driving me crazy!!" , Tue 12 Aug 08:51
I have been on effexor xr for 3 years now. I made the decision to get off the medication because I didn't want to be on it anymore. I seen my doctor and she made out a tapering schedule for me. I've been trying now for about 2 months to slowly get off of it and it has been terrible. The withdrawls are horrible to deal with. The "shocks", sudden bursts of anger, you know what I'm talking about. Is there anyone out there that is experiencing or has experienced what I'm going through right now? Please reply.... Is there light at the end of this tunnel? Tracy

I have gone thru what you're going thru. The buzzing in my head is driving me nuts. I've had bizarre nightmares, dizziness, etc. etc. I checked Mayo Clinic website and they give you some really good material on this med.

Hi Tracey,
Just seen your post. I went through the same a few years ago. Have a look at http://www.clive.hodgson.btinternet.co.uk/withdrawal.html
I think it is reassuring when you know that this type of withdrawal problem is not unusual and that the symptoms do reduce over time.
All the best.

I can TOTALLY relate to your withdrawls. I have been on Effexor XR for 6 years and and have recently started weaning off of this medication. It's been just over three and a half months and I am still taking a very small dosage in the morning and still have the buzzing in my head, shocks you mentioned, as well as the periodical shaking, night sweats, cold sweats in the middle of a 90 degree day and some I can't even think of right now. One thing I have noticed, it does lessen over time. Remember... I am still taking a small dosage and still going through this.
I refuse, however, to let this get the better of me. I am getting off this medication if for no other reason, because I am tired of the addiction (that's right I said addiction). I just force myself to get through it another day.
I know this doesn't help, and I hope you don't go through the withdrawls as long as I have been going through them.

I have just tapered of of Lexapro. I had all of the same withdrawal side effects that I had coming off of paxil in 1996. I sympathize with you. Be reassured it WILL go away. Mine took about 6 weeks both times. With the lexapro I had a vision blockage problem as well! I am convinced it was lexapro!!
I take 900mg. Kira each morning now and 300-600mg. Nutrilite SJW at lunch. I am thinking of trying Perika as it's extract seems to be more potent.
Hang in there! And go s-l-o-w-l-y with the withdrawal. klm

I am coming off Paxil - ohh not nice. Jitters, electric shock feelings, general depression. But after talking about it with my girlfriend and the Dr, I seem a bit better. I am reducing down from 30mg to zero for the same reason as you. I am down to 10mg and will have a go on 5mg today. Even though it is not a nice feeling, I am confident about what I am doing, as I can choose to increase my dosage if I feel I am doing it too quickly, my girlfriend and I discuss each dosage change which I find really neat, I am not abrogating my responsibilities, but we both find that sharing the issue is theraputic for me and our relationship - I still have the final say, but she is included in the process. It's kinda neat and we have got closer which gives me hope for the future. Not everyone is as fortunate as me to have a great friend like her, but if you find this forum helpful, then feel free to lean on me for advice. Take care.

Thanks so much for your kind words of encouragement. I have a wonderful husband that has been very supportive of me through all this. I have another check up with my doctor next week. Please keep in touch.

VERY normal. I came off 37.5 mg Effexor and it was sheer hell. What I ended up doing was after I'd been off Effexor for 2 weeks I started taking St John's Wort and that eased alot of the withdrawl effects.

I've read somewhere that you shouldn't take St. John's Wort with Effexor. Anyone read this?

This is normal. I have been on Paxil, Effexor XR and most recently, Lexapro. I have just gotten off the Lexapro in the last few days and have experienced jitters, anger and fatigue. I am now using the 5HTP at 50 to 70 milligrams three times daily and am getting much better. Just give it time. It is different with each individual but it will get better. Are you now taking 5HTP in tapering? Try a small dose, about 10 milligrams a day and see if it helps your withdrawal. Don't give up. Linda
