"healtheries" , Sat 17 May 20:00

I've been looking everywhere but i can't seem to find any information about this brand. And i can't figure it out for myself. It says it contains extracts equivalent; hypercium perforatum 2000mg, standerdised to provide hypercium 1.1mg, hyperforin 16.7 mg. (per tablet)

Theres a bunch of other stuff in there too (vit. B6 ect). It says to take 1-3 tablets but i have no idea if this stuff is any good or if it is how much i should be taking.

I gather you are in Oz? 3 tablets a day of that stuff is the usual therapeutic dose.

I did a lot of research into Oz brands about 18 months ago, so let me save you some trouble. Go straight to the Herron SJW brand in the supermarket, about $12 for 60 tablets. If you can't find Herron, then Blackmores is the same product for about $18. Healtheries is possibly the same product as well (judging by the specs), but I never was able to find that out from the suppliers.

I've been using Herron for 18 months straight and it's been a godsend.

Thanks :)
I had a look for the Herron stuff but to no avail. I'm in NZ and after the huge Pan withdrawl theres slim pickings at the chemist. I'll see how this stuff goes though.

Ahh, well there's the problem. Try the supermarket

Herron and Blackmore were never affected by the Pan recall (and what a beatup that was).

Epyx,

Interesting to hear your thoughts about Herron - I believe they use the "StJohnSelect" extract by Indena. Do you know how that particular extract compares to Perika by Nature's Way? Is the hyperforin in the Indena extract stabalized? And is Perika available in Australia yet?

Many thanks,

Sneak

Hi Sneak,

I'm only guessing, but are you referring to a message I posted ages ago?

http://www.sjwinfo.org/forums/Brands/messages/10148.shtml

It's just that I've never seen those concepts connected anywhere else. Back then, I connected a few dots here and there and confirmed my guesses with Indena and Pathway.

Perika vs St.JohnSelect is a very interesting question. The short answer is that they are probably similar enough to be identical for our purposes. Now for the long answer

Perika is currently the only international product available which uses the patented WS-5572 extract. Perika's advertising makes reference to the original German patent, but Willmar Schwabe also lodged US patents at a later date. If you search the USPTO website (US Patents & Trademarks Office), you discover an English language version of the German patent (US# 6,280,736). This patent describes the "stabiliser" in some detail, as well as the WS-5572 extraction process.

The stabiliser can include, but is not limited to, the following:

* cysteine
* glutathione
* ascorbic acid
* fatty acid esters of ascorbic acid

In other words, the stabiliser is an anti-oxidant, or in even plainer language, it's a preservative. The patent also describes the use of nitrogen to exclude oxygen during extraction, but there is no attempt to quantify that in the application. Intuitively, this seems to me a less important procedure than the stabiliser itself.

With St.JohnSelect, Indena adds 1mg of a powerful antioxidant that they call "LeucoSelect", which is their OPC extract (OPC - oligomeric proanthocyanidins - is derived from grape seed). Indena doesn't usually disclose this, nor do they appear to make advertising claims for it (which probably lets them skirt Schwabe's patent). But this fact is disclosed under US labelling laws on products like RealSJW.

I read an article the other day that said that Indena shipped about 35,000 tonnes of extract to the US alone back around 1998. This means that there must be dozens of manufacturers with SJW products based on St.JohnSelect. It's a shame that Indena isn't promoted on the labels of these products because it would carry infintely more credibility than any claims the end manufacturer could make. (On that point, Indena has been toying with the idea of running a Quality Seal on products that use their extracts).

Re Perika in Australia: No, I've never seen it here. Some Nature's Way products are available here branded as "Nature's Path", but only a very limited subset of their catalogue is available. You'd have to buy Perika on the Net if you wanted to try it.

I hope this answers your question.
