Topic Title: How much is too much?
| | "How much is too much?" , Sun 11 May 15:14
I've been taking 325 mg. of St.John's Wort and was wondering if I should double up the amount. On the back it says to take one tablet three times a day or two tablets three times day. Isn't 325 mg. a lot in general? At first(4 weeks or so)I felt a definte change in mood, now I am begining to feel the effects slightly dissipating and my negativity/anxiety recurring. Should I switch brands? The brand I currently using is Soulgar. Any suggestions/comments? Thanks, Ernesto

Ernesto, as far as I am aware, Solgar only makes one type of SJW product, which contains 175mg in each extract. Most people take 900mg of extract per day, so if we are talking about the same tablets, you should be taking up to 5 each day.
I'm not sure where your figure of 325mg comes from. The most important figure in working out dosage is the amount of extract in each tablet. All other figures should just about be ignored e.g. dried herb equivalent, powdered raw SJW content.

Solgar do sell a 300 mg standardised extract, at least in the UK (it's here). I'm guessing that this 325 mg product is a variant of this. It's surprising that they recommend taking up to 6 of them. I've never heard of another SJW brand recommending this. I believe this amount is being used in research on using SJW for severe depression, so presumably it's safe.

Thanks for finding that one Daniel. I would doubt Ernesto's "325mg" product is the same one since he quoted the exact figure. "325" mg is often seen as a component of "500mg" products -- 325mg of SJW powder plus 175mg of extract. Solgar do indeed make such a product.
The "up to 6" comment came from me and not Solgar. I think Solgar only recommend 2. Having said that, there is no established LD50 with SJW. I think I once calculated that you'd need about 30 tablets in a day to induce primary photosensitisation, but even that is a fairly trivial condition.

hello ernesto, I take 600mg of Spring Valley SJW in the morning and 600mg at night. It is safe to take up to 1200mg daily. I wasn't able to take the full SJW in the morning due to fatigue and wanting to sleep alot. This seems to be doing good for me, my moods have mellowed and I still have energy to carry on during the day.

I'm pretty sure sjw has been proven safe at the 1200 mg dose. So if you think an increase in your dose would be beneficial go for it.
