"tablets drying out?" , Fri 25 Apr 07:45

I'm taking Nature's Aid (UK brand - anyone else taking this?) which comes in tablet form. I'm halfway through the bottle, and the tablets definitely don't taste as strong as they did originally. I dont think its because i'm just getting used to them, as occasionally the odd one has a strong taste. Is this an indication that they are drying out and losing their potency, making them less effective? Am i still getting the stated dose?

Also, i've seen that with the healthspan brand, each tablet is individually sealed in foil - does this keep them fresher and is it worth switching to it?

thanks for any help

I'm not sure why you are tasting them -- aren't you just swallowing them? I doubt they are changing.

Healthspan appears to be a good brand, but I have no idea if it better than your current brand.

hi there
i get the taste when i put the tablet on my tongue before swigging it down with water - i just noticed they dont taste as strong anymore (apart from the odd one), and wondered if this was a sign of drying out and being less effective. - i thought that was a common concern with SJW, that the active ingredients could degrade fairly quickly.

Fair enough. I don't think it's a sign of them drying out. The concern is mostly for hyperforin, but that degrades anyway in the absence of any attempt to preserve it (e.g. WS-5572 extract).

thanks for the reply Epyx, just another quick question for you!

As hyperforin now seems to be regarded as far more important than hypericin, does this mean that brands that do not have the WS-5572 extract are ineffective? As far as I'm aware, none of the main brands in the UK specify the hyperforin content, or have the above formula that preserves it. Hopefully this will change in the future, but for the moment are we Brits taking substandard SJW?

I have seen two lab assays that support the hyperforin strength of WS-5572, so it's not just a gimmick. But of course, other brands manage to deliver solid amounts of hyperforin in similar testing too without relying on this extract. My general feeling is that consumers should be demanding SJW products which are standardised on hyperforin and which disclose this on their labels.

You are correct that British products don't appear to disclose this, but that seems to a universally British phenomenon. Quest and Healthspan (two common recommendations here) both omit this listing too, but you may well find that their extract contains hyperforin. This appears to be the case with some Australian brands, whose extracts are known to be sourced from a company which insists on hyperforin standardization, yet the consumer label on the finished product omits any mention of it. I would not say that British SJW is automatically inferior; products like Healthspan and Quest use enviable manufacturing methods.

Like British dosage instructions, once can only hope this changes as you say.

Epyx - thanks for the reply, some very helpful info there. I'll probably stick with the brand i'm using as the SJW seems to be having an effect, but its good to know there are other well thought of brands in the UK that I could switch to if needed.
