Topic Title: dosage

I am new to st. johns wort and herbs altoghether. However, I was strongly urged to try st. johns wort for mild depression. I found myself very confused at the drugstore trying to locate the correct dosage which from what I understand is 300 mg 3 x's daily. I was finally convinced by the salesperson to pick up 1000 mg of fingerprinted st. johns wort which prescribes 1-2 tablets 3 X's daily....I have two questions: 1 - Isn't that way over the reccommended dosage? 2 - What is the difference between fingerprinted and standardized? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I gather you went shopping at GNC. "Fingerprinted" is one of their product lines and the word doesn't really mean anything by itself.
GNC go out of their way to confuse their customers. Thankfully they have dropped one of their pointless lines ("Full Spectrum") and minimised another ("Concentrated"). This just leaves Fingerprinted and Standardized:
Fingerprinted -- chopped raw herb Standardized -- standardised SJW extract
With SJW, chopped herb is an inferior way to get your dose. In fact it may even be useless, so it's sad to see that "Fingerprinted SJW" is among their top sellers. This represents an awful lot of consumers who will get little or no effect and who will declare SJW "worthless" to their friends.
"Standardised" is what you want. This contains a regular amount of SJW extract exactly like they used in all the successful clinical studies.
The dose of your current capsules is based on raw herb, whereas the usual recommended dose is based on extract i.e. 900mg of SJW extract per day. Assuming 6:1 equivalence, you should be consuming about 6 tablets a day, but even then I doubt that any hyperforin would reach the shelf at GNC.
Run out and buy the proper stuff as soon as possible. Add a Fingerprinted tablet to your regular dosage then to use them up.
