"UK brand / dosage confusion!!!" , Wed 26 Mar 04:39

Hi there,
I'm new to this forum and have been taking SJW tincture for 5 weeks with no real effect. (My doctor recommended I try SJW for mild-moderate depression, I've used seroxat fairly successfully before but would like to try SJW before going bact to it).

Is it worth switching to the tablet form - do they give a stronger dose than the tincture? (I take 45 drops a day of 1:2 solution) What brand should i try? Quest, Healthspan and Holland& Barret seem to be popular UK brands on the forum, but do they all contain the LI160 formula? If not, where can I get it? I spoke to someone in Boots who told me that 300mg a day of Kira Kira was the maximum she would recommend to take - very confusing in light of all the comments here about the need to take 900mg!

Finally, what benefit have people had from SJW? Can I expect a significant improvement in mood, or is it more of a vague feeling of being not quite so down (which is how I feel now after 6 weeks of the tincture.)

thanks for any help you can give me, particularly with the LI160 question.

Dear Penman,

All of the brands of SJW which you mention are fine. Quest, in particular, is regularly recommended on this site and is definitely worth a try. I wouldn't personally get too hung up about LI160 or any of that malarkey. Buy a decent brand like Quest and do exactly what it says on the tin.

I took Seroxat for around six months last year and was fairly nonplussed by it - particularly in view of the fact that it reduced my love life to an embarrasing shambles (and had fairly nasty withdrawal symptoms).

SJW, by contrast, kicked in much quicker, has been very effective and has had no side effects whatsoever.

The woman in Boots was wrong, (although she was simply reiterating the dosage instructions on the so called 'one-a-day' UK packs of Kira) - you can in fact take up to three of the 300mg tablets per day....although in the case of the Kira brand it would cost you an arm and a leg!

Good luck,

Sheephead.

By the way, if you cannot find Quest SJW in your local store, the website address for ordering, or whatever, is www.questvitamins.co.uk

yeah

Thanks Sheephead,

I checked out the healthspan and quest websites, both seem to be good, will probably try healthspan. HOwever, I've been feeling a marked improvement these last couple of days, so I might stick to the tincture for a while longer. With all the conflicting information around, the best thing to do seems to be to try a brand, if it works, stick to it, if not, try another. (For example, I spoke to 4 herbiologists yesterday, 2 told me the dose I'm taking was fine, the other 2 told me it was very low and to double it! One wanted me to go for a consultation, at £37, with follow ups of £27 a time, plus £6 a week for the herbs.)

anyway, thanks again for the advice.
Penman
