"KIRA three (x 300 mcg) per day" , Thu 20 Feb 05:50

Hello folks,

I've just started taking these, but scanning through some of the posts here, 900 mcg a day is well short of the optimum dose. I also read that weight has a bearing on it (and I must be abt 175 pounds).

Could anyone advise pls ?

Thanks in advance,
Aces

Aces, it's a disgrace (in my opinion) that these Kira 300mcg tablets remain on the market. They only cause confusion and they are neither the strength nor formulation used in the majority of successful clinical trials.

Your weight is about average so no need to adjust dosage for body mass in any case. Speaking of that, I would really like to see some references about SJW dosage and body mass as I don't feel comfortable promoting this line of thought, even though it makes practical sense.

My advice? Switch brands

Thanks Epyx,

If my math is right, the Kira dose 900 mcg is 1000 times weaker than the recommended dose 900 mg?

I've switched to Solgar 3 x 300 mg. See my post in 'General Discussion' if you are able to help :)

Thanks again,
Matt

The 900 mcg refers to the amount of hypericin in the dose. The standard dose is 900 mg of SJW extract, standardised to contain 0.3% hypericin. That makes 2700 mcg of hypericin which is three times the dose that Kira recommend in the UK. Hypericin used to thought of as the main active ingredient of SJW, so almost all SJW is standardised to 0.3% hypericin. However, attention has since shifted to hyperforin, and some brands are starting to standardise on 4% hyperforin as well.

For context:

SJW dosage is a lot more confusing than with pharmaceuticals. With pharmaceuticals, the dose is exact, uniform and controlled e.g. 5mg Ducene refers to only one thing.

With SJW, it's more complicated. You start with raw herb, create an extract using alcohol, and then you need to standardise the extract on certain components. This gives rise to at least 4 different weight measuremements in SJW marketing:

1. The amount of SJW extract - usually 300mg ("milligrams")

2. The amount of raw herb represented by the extract - usually 1800mg for a 6:1 extract

3. The amount of hypericin in the tablet - usually 900mcg (mcg means "micrograms"). Commonly expressed as 0.3%.

4. The amount of hyperforin - less commonly seen - usually expressed as 4% (about 12mg).

There are even more tricks, but it's probably best that people stick with standard 300mg tablets. These are the type most commonly used in clinical research.
