Topic Title: Kira UK - dosages explained
| | "Kira UK - dosages explained" , Mon 6 Jan 11:07
I recently e-mailed Lichtwer, who are the manufacurers of the Kira brand, to ask them why the recommended dosage for Kira marketed in the UK is lower than elsewhere. I thought readers might be interested in their reply (which I have reproduced verbatim):
"You are right in saying that in Europe, particularly Germany, St. John's Wort is taken in higher doses of 900mcg [hypericin] up to three times daily.
However, this dosage is prescribed by doctors. Daily dosages of 900mcg are sold over the counter and indeed doctors have the choice of prescribing either dose.
As Kira St. John's Wort is sold as an unlicensed herbal medicine in the UK we are not able to recommend the higher dose. However, your doctor may recommend this, particularly if he has read any of the research.
We are able to send this information to your doctor at your request."
This is an interesting and quite illuminating statement, because it concedes that the low dosage recommendation on their UK product is merely a legal obligation and contradicts current research into St. John's Wort. (Research which they are quite happy to share on request).
It seems a peculiar state of affairs that the producer of a remedial product are obliged to post dosage directions on the package which they obviously feel quite at odds with.
If anyone wishes to pursue this matter or request further information, Lichtwer's web address is www.lichtwer.co.uk (or .com).
Hope this is helpful.

Sheephead, you might not see this reply, but I wanted to thank you for raising this issue again and for dissecting Lichtwer's position so elegantly.
I pursued the issue in mid-July 2002 and got a similar reply from Lichtwer UK, which I posted here at the time.
I'm still somewhat unconvinced about the licensing laws which they claim preclude them from advising the higher dosage. Why is it that other UK manufacturers seem to advise the full research dosage?
