"Hypericin, Hyperforin?" , Mon 6 Jan 07:12

Hi: For 3 months, I've taken GNC's STANDARDIZED brand of SJW, three 300 mg. tablets a day (0.3% Hypericin)- (Hypericin Perforatum) and it kicked in for me on the 7th day. It was unmistakable, as I had insomnia until then. After reading that the important ingredient in SJW may well be HYPERFORIN, I just did some research on Google.com and find that all standardized brands of SJW contain HYPERICIN as well as HYPERFORIN (the two are a package deal)...In other words, Hypericin and Hyperforin are intrinsic ingredients in the standardized form of the herb. I've read that some of you swear by one brand and others by another brand. Is there any good reason why I should consider switching from GNC Standardized SJW to another brand? It does contain both Hypericin and Hyperforin, right? Thanks so much for your kind advice. Jeanette

I have been using the GNC standardized SJW for 9 days. I feel I'm having very good results. My depression has lifted and my mood is much improved. I had trouble sleeping the first few nights. It seemed I couldn't get into a deep sleep. I have switched to taking 2 tablets in the morning and 1 at lunch. I have read that some folks don't like the GNC brand. All I know is it has done something positive for me. I previously had been taking an MAIO for 10 years. I got off it 2 months ago and the depression really kicked in. The MAIO had been a life saver at the time I started it but it was really hard on my bladder and no telling what it did to my liver. I was afraid I was going to have to start the MAIO again until I found this website. I am so glad the SJW is working for me.

Dear Bcjanet:
I'm glad to hear that three GNC tablets of SJW are working well for you, as they do for me. They say "If it works, don't fix it" so I'm going to continue with GNC Standardized SJW, whichhas "a minimum of 3% Hypericin (0.9 mg) and therefore must also contain Hyperforin. There has been much scientific research on SJW for mild to moderate depression, for many years now and which was then based on it's containing 3% Hypericin. Kelly's General Information on this website stresses Hypericin and makes no mention of Hyperforin. Research on Google.com indicates all standardized brands of SJW which contain 3% Hypericin ALSO contain sufficient Hyperforin as well...It's a package deal in the SJW itself. So I say "If it works, don't fix it." The important thing is that GNC SJW be "STANDARDIZED" and not "Fingerprinted" or ground up leaves. I'm glad to hear that you no longer take an MAOI, as they can be dangerous when combinded with certain foods. SJW is wonderful! Enjoy.

Well, yes and no. I agree that hyperforin should be present in fresh ethanolic extract, although it does deteriorate on the shelf, so you can end up with very little in some products. Also, some non-ethanolic processes like Ze-117 result in NO hyperforin content at all.

If you are getting good results with your present product, then stick with it. But for new purchasers, I would strongly advise seeking out a product which explicitly states the hyperforin content.

All SJW extracts should contain some hyperforin - the question is, how much? From what I've seen they do seem to vary a lot in hyperforin content. Some brands do standardise their extract to contain 4% hyperforin as well as 0.3% hypericin, but even those that don't often say that their extract 'contains hyperforin'. I take Kira, which claims it is rich in hyperforin, but doesn't standardise it, so there's no way of being sure. However, after a few initial ups and downs it seems to be working well for me, so I have no intention of switching to another brand for the moment. I think if your brand is working well for you, there's no reason to change it.
