Topic Title: 5HTP and Rhodiola together
| | "5HTP and Rhodiola together" , Sun 1 Dec 21:26
Regarding taking 5HTP and Rhodiola together. I have been doing so for a few weeks and was recomended to do so by the woman at our local health food store. She was told by the person selling the Rhodiola to take them in conjunction with one another because they increase the seratonin production by 30% when taken together. I hope that it is ok to do so. I trust my health food store. Warm Regards, Newmoon

Newmoon, I would be surprised if this was true. You would need to ask the person selling it to point to a clinical study that supports this statement.
In any case, more serotonin is not necessarily a good thing. It's not considered good form to mix two serotonergic substances together for fear of the dreaded "serotonin syndrome".

I'm sure most people at health food stores mean well, but you have to check this advice out each time. Get some books from a book store on herbal remedies, or go to the local library. The key thing in being your own Doctor is the amount of research you are willing to do. I believe in listening to advice from others, but always look for supporting information. As Epyx just said," Look for a study that supports what the woman told you." Well done studies, carefully carried out, are the gold standard of herbal nutrition. James

In my opinion it is not a good idea to take Rhodiola and 5htp together. Rhodiola works in a way similar to MAOI's by inhibiting the natural process of the way serotonin is broken down. It seems to me that 5htp and Rhodiola together would work in a way similar to phen-fen, you may have great results, but how will it affect your heart? I guess all this depends on the dosage, but it just doesn't seem safe to me. Why not just take a higher dose of 5htp let your body use what it needs, break down and get rid of the rest?

well actually there are studies in which they used MAOIs and 5 HTP together. and they got good results (see Dr. Null's book 5 HTP). plus Rhodiola is really not an MAOI, its behaviour as one is very limited and clinically not significant, i read.
