Topic Title: HELP with Health Aid vs Healthspan in UK
| | "HELP with Health Aid vs Healthspan in UK" , Wed 13 Nov 06:17
I just looked at the dosage info for SJW on Healthspan's site. It says that each tablet contains 300 mg Hypericum Perforatum L containing 900 mcg Hypericin. Is that what we need? I thought it was 900mg, not mcg.
I bought my first bottle of SJW yesterday, and it's made by Health Aid. It's much more expensive, and I'm concerned about the dosage. It says that it contains 315mg of SJW powder and 185 mg of the Standardized Extract (.3% hypericin). I'm going to take 5 tablets to bring the dosage up to 900mg of the Extract, but I'm concerned about taking over 1500mg of the powder now.
My question is, if I switch to Healthspan after taking Health Aid, will this make a difference?
Please help me because I am really confused and I'm afraid that I'm taking too much SJW. Thanks.

I've been taking Healthspan SJW for nearly two years. The "correct" dosage is three tablets a day. Look for posts from Epyx on this topic and you will be less confused. As for brand changes, it's impossibly individual. Healthspan works very well for me, it is a quality brand, but may not work for other people. The psychiatrist I saw when I was really bad (who approves of SJW, incidentally) told me that different brands of the same SSRIs varied in effect from person to person.

Thanks Dave
I can understand the confusion about the "SJW Powder". Although the term can be used to refer to different things, in this case I believe it refers to pulverised, dried, raw plant material. It's really just there as filler I think; some SJW products actually refer to this as the "base" (probably a nicer way of putting it). It doesn't usually contribute any significant therapeutic benefits and I'm confident it can be ignored in any calculations.
Dave, now I'm confused! When you say "correct" dosage, are these the manufacturer's instructions, doctor's instructions or something else?

Healthspans recommended dosage is 1 tablet per day. I asked the psychiatrist for advice and having seen the packet, three was his recommendation.
i have been trying to cut down to two, which has been OK until I get some pressure and have to revert to three. I'll get there eventually.

After taking 900mg of another brand (Goldshield) for 2 years I also recently switched to Healthspan (when I realised that Goldshield and other brands I had used all contained yucky gelatine - Healthspan seems to be one of the few brands that are veggie-friendly, if it's of interest to anyone). But I am so glad to have clicked on this site tonight after a long time away and read about the possible dosage confusion with 900mcg v 900mg. I have been taking only one 900mcg tablet for the last 2-3 weeks thinking it was the full daily dose. Yesterday, after a difficult week, I began to double the dose (thinking that anything was better than drifting back onto SSRIs). But now I realise that an average daily dose shoudl be about 3 tablets. So, thanks to everyone. Take care.

Oops, I confused Health Aid with Healthspan. Good to see your psych recommended the clinical dosage too.
I went through the same cut-down exercise myself a while back, unsuccessfully I might add. For no particular reason, I am once again going cold turkey and having some success with exercise.

Thank you both so much for your help. I ordered some Healthspan and hopefully it will be here by Monday. When it comes, I'm going to just switch to that. Thanks again, I really appreciate it!
