"Question about dosage" , Sun 21 Jul 17:19

I have been diagnosed with mild to moderate depression, and was immediately prescribed Prozac. After doing a lot of research on the drug, I've determined the side effects I can experience with Prozac makes me very reluctant to even try it. I've heard a lot lately about St. John's Wort as a possible cure for someone with mild to moderate depression. So I'm going to give it a try. My question is the brand I bought GNC Herbal plus, lists the amounts differently then I've seen on your website. This is what the bottle says, maybe you can tell me in plain english the dosage..."St. John's Wort leaves and flowers 1000mg (Hypericum perforatum) (from 166.7 mg of st. john's wort herb extract 6:1). I have no idea what that means..can you help? The bottle says it's 'concentrated'...is that a good thing?

Is it a good thing? In a way, no. I personally think GNC should be shot for their confusing product categories. In GNC-Speak, "Concentrated" actually means it is a weak form of their "Standardised" product. Your capsules are what we would call a 167mg cap, which is about half the regular size (300mg of extract).

The instructions say to take 1-3, but you are denying yourself a full dose if you do that. 2-6 would bring your dosage into line with those used in successful clinical trials (and therefore what most of us take).

Switch to the "Standardised" line if you want to stay with GNC after this bottle.

I too have a question about dosage. The stuff I've bought is the "standardised" version but the concentration of hypericin is listed as 900µg. (They are sold as "one-a-day tablets"). My question is this...I thought "µg" meant micro-grams whereas "mg" (which you all seem to be talking about) meant milligrams. Have I bought something 1000 times to weak? Is it a misprint? or is µg just a pain to do on a computer keyboard? :o)

Your help would be greatly appreciated as I'm confused now!
