Hi everyone,

I used to do a lot of running - half marathons and things - and was getting personal bests even though touching 40. Then suddenly, a year ago, it started to make me ill. Now I can only run very slowly, and doing just 3 miles makes me feel unwell - headache, hungover, bad gut, and dreadfully tired and achy (like I've run a marathon).

The doctor did all the tests, and there is nothing wrong with me physically, even though I get puffed walking up the stairs. She is 100% sure it is depression and stress that is causing the problems. I have tried extra vitamins with no effect.

Has anyone else found this? I am desperate to start running again, and have started on 5-HTP. After 3 weeks I am no better.

I'm no doctor, but that sounds a bit like CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome). A diagnosis of CFS is usually based on symptoms (at least 4 of 8 known ones). Did your doctor rule that out?

It's even worth doing a little reading about CFS because it will give you some extra things to ask for in trying to rule it out and find other causes e.g.:

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I thought of CFS, but I am not tired at all until I have exercised vigorously. I have read that depression and stress can cause problems with exercise, so I thought I'd try treating it, but with little effect so far!! I'll persevere for a bit..........
