"OK all you UK-ers out there, help!" , Thu 17 Jan 13:43

Hello. I just started taking St. John's Wort a week ago. My GP recommended the product for depression. She wasn't exactly sure what the best dosage was, she said somewhere around 400mg (or so she thought). I purchased Boots brand. The box says it is 300mg, however I have no idea what the percentage is (.3% Kelly recommends). There is no other information but the 300mg on the box. Does anyone have any idea if Boots is reliable? It says, 'only take 1 a day!' on the box.

Thanks.

Hi! I've just switched to Boots own 300mg "One a DAY". They seem fine and are made in Germany so may be KIRA manufactured, which is good. Look on the SIDE of the box: it says:
Each tablet contains 300 mg sjw dried extract containing HYPERICIN 900 ug. SO IT IS equivalent to the recommended 900 dose. Stick with it for a few weeks. Good luck!

OK Michael, now I am confused. If you read lower in the post (where I discover the 900ug) David (and others throughout the site) encourage 2 to 3 doses of the 900ug a day. Do you find that just 1 dose is working for you?

Hi there Littleone!

I must say that I'm pleased (and amazed) that your GP recommended SJW - I was with mine and he couldn't find any info. about it on his computer or in his books!!, he just advised me to take it continuously for a couple of months to see if it worked! - Thank heavens for this forum!!!

Anyway, I've never taken Boots brand so I can't tell you anything about its effectiveness. I can however tell you that as far as dosages go, the usual concentration of the active ingredient is 0.3%, some brands are one-a-day and will therefore be of a higher concentration...If you can't find this info. on the packaging, I would recommend you to stop taking it and find an alternate one which states the concentration - otherwise who knows how much you are taking or what could happen?!

If you need to find a different brand I can recommend Quest Vitamins…available from health food shops, I've taken it for a while with significant success at a dosage of 333mg @ 0.3% twice/three times daily depending on how I feel.

Hope any of this helps and stick with it - it should help!!

Let me know how it goes or if you need anymore help!!

David (London)

Thanks David! I guess that the southern GPs are more progressive?! (I am in Southampton). I don't know about the .3%, but it also says hypercin 900ug on the box. I didn't know if that refers to strength or was some sort of chemical differentiation. If you have a clue, let me know.

Thanks.

Hi again

If it says that there is 900ug of hypericin (active ingredient) in a 300 mg tablet, then that is (according to my calculations) 0.3%, because 1000ug = 1mg.

However, I can't figure out why it says to only take one a day, because of you do that you are only getting one third of the active ingredient that I get????

Start with one a day for say 2 or 3 weeks, after this if you don't notice any major change, up the dosage or switch brands!

Regards

David

Hi everyone.

If the label says 900microgrammes per tablet, then that is the recommended daily dose. If it says 900ug per 1000mg and the tablets are 300mg then you would need three to reach the the daily recommendation.

I am almost certain that these are a "strong" version of the tablet, so you only need one a day (as they say) to achieve the recommended level. Good luck!

I agree with David, something is strange here. To be a true "one a day" tablet, the concentration would need to be approx 0.9% hypericin, which is extremely unusual.

The fact that neither the box nor the Boots website discloses the concentration is cause for grave concern and reason enough to seek out a different brand. Flex your consumer muscle! :)

Heh ... now I AM confused :) I bought the boots because I simply couldn't afford the Kira, (and they were still more than a tenner;-), but I am wary about taking them now because of the confusion over dosage. I had presumed that if it said one a day then it likely means that but ... does that in fact mean I am only getting a third the amount I was before?

I also noted that the product was made in Germany and thought this might be a good sign. Anyone out there using it regularly have any feedback on its effectiveness?

I am gonna have a close look at the box and see if I can find a helpline number I think!!

Jos,
It is 1 a day. That is what I took. After a few months however, I stopped. I figured the sun has come out, life was turning around, I don't need it anymore. However, the clouds are coming back (in my head anyway). So I will probably start taking them again. With 1, I was just fine.

I am sorry to hear you are feeling worse than ever. I hope that you aren't having any bad side-effects as a result of St. John's Wart. It took about 3 weeks before I felt something. However, it was pretty big, it wasn't like a gradual development, it was more of a sudden 'bang'! I hope this happens for you. Take care.
