Topic Title: How can brands differ so much?
| | "How can brands differ so much?" , Thu 6 Dec 11:43
I'm just curious if anyone knows how different brands of the same concentration of the same herb can differ so much. Right now I'm taking TruNature and have only been doing so for several weeks. I get confused reading so many different things about so many different brands. Is it possible they can differ that greatly?
Thanks in advance.

I really do not think one brand really differs from another. As long as you get one that is standardized to 3% you should be fine. That's just my opinion. The first brand I bought was standardized and it worked. I really think most people are confusing this with a true SSRI, where one will work better than the other, but they fail to remember with SSRI, each "brand" has different ingredients, unlike SJW.

I think the main reason that there is so much possible variability in SJW preparations (and herbals in general) is because around the world, these treatments are classified as "dietary supplements" rather than as therapeutic drugs. This means that there is little regulatory control and less formality in testing. The 1998 LA Times lab tests are a good example of how much herbal preparations can vary from their labelled specs.
Generally though, I agree that you should look for a standardised dosage -- 300mg standardised extract, 0.3% hypericin. All the trials that showed clinical effectiveness used this dosage.
