"Anyone know a good brand in Australia?" , Tuesday 16 Jan 23:32

Hi,

I am just about to move from Aropax20mg to St. John's Wort. I have seen few brands around but some of them reach $77 per month (90 tablets 300mg each) Unfortunately I can not afford it. I would appreciate if somebody knows a cheaper brand available in Australia that works.

Thanks and Regards
Pachelly

90 tabs per month @ 300 mg equivalent strength ? That's the dietary supplement strength tabs you are using; 1800mg - 2g (flowering tops equivalent) are more usual for therapeutic benefits, as the optimum dose for treatment of mild-moderate depression has been established at around 5400mg daily.
I experimented with St John's Wort, at various dosages, after SERIOUSLY unsatisfactory side effects to Zoloft (including sexual dysfunction.... THIS is supposed to help me get over depression???) and reactions (Dramatic cardiac palpitations and arhythmia, and violent mood swings including one further suicide attempt).
My perception is that St John's Wort has been a significant help in achieving some level of stability, with none of the adverse effects I experienced taking synthetic SSRI's. 1800mg daily was the lowest dosage I maintained. This had some beneficial effect, and is probably the lowest you should consider. On increasing my dosage to 3600mg, the improvements were dramatic. I have maintained this, with occasional supplementation of a third tab to help when I feel particularly low (5400mg daily) and have found this has helped me achieve a sustainable improvements, which included "riding out" several significant personal crisis' within this period, and a gradually increasing ratio of "good days", which I believe will continue to improve.
As with the pharmaceutical products, 2 weeks will normally be required before significant benefits will become apparent.
Blackmores was a quite consistent and acceptable product, but I have found Herron St John's Wort 1800 to be equally effective, widely available (most Coles supermarkets carry it) and quite cost effective, at $11.85 for 60 tabs (roughly 1 month supply, at my preferred dosage).
Good luck finding your own effective level.

I am just about to get some SJW from a company called Golden glow which sell vitamins and herbal remedies. I have been using this company for around 10 years for all my health care products and have not once been dissapointed in the quality of their products and service.
They mail order around australia and have a web site as well

www.goldenglow.com.au

and have a toll free number within australia 1300-36-36-56

I can recommend them highly. they have a 2000mg tablet
Each tablet provides extracts equiv. dry: Hypericum perforatum (St John's Wort) herb approx. 2g (standardised equiv. Hypericin 903.2mcg - 1.129mg)
the price is $17.80 for 100 tabs which I believe is very competitive as like the rest of their range. But I know from experience that all their other products are of high quality and trust to buy my SJW from them as well.

good luck hope this helps

Im a student Nurse who has currently switched from zoloft to aropax and now finally St Johns Wort. I am currently using Cenovis Brand Hypericum so far for 7 days. I would be interested in finding out what you have found effective. I have also been taking Herron Brand valerium of an evening. I have never been on any anti depressants or anti anxiety before so I hope Im doing the right thing.

There is a good and bad news with the brand that I have been using.(Hyperiforte Blackmores )
Good news is that I am without prescription drugs for more than a month and do not have a need to use them again.
Bad news is that I am sometimes very tired during day. I am going to try to use all 3 tablets in the evenings and I hope that will make me less tired.
What is your experience with Cenovis so far?

G Day

I wish I could sleep, Im now trying 3 X tablets of an evening, cenovis Hypericum Hyperforte has 1.86 grams of SJW extract per tablet. its about $ 7.00 - $ 9.00 Aus per 50 tablets. Its very important you get a good quality brand as different parts of the plant can be used for cheaper brands with not much effect. Speaking to class mates at University in pharmacology lectures SJW have proven same clinical results as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors of conventional medicine so your laughing because the side effects are bugger all compared to stuff like zoloft, apromax etc. I bet some Dr's and staff wish prozac was used in crop dusting plane on urban area's. Blackmores is good but at $14.00 a bottle cenovis is just as good. Ive also been taking valerian to neutralise the insomnia effect. I ve been on blackmores before they recommend 3 times daily where I take mine now in the evening before bed. So far regardless when I take it I still dont sleep any better but as time kicks in sleep will come back.

I have had problem sleepeng for the first 2 weeks but luckily I am OK now. I have got another side effect that makes me crazy. Ejaculation, just a bit more than nothing. Some people have problem with this when they are on Aropax etc but for me it is the other way around. I was OK on Aropax but not on SJW. I will probably soon put it under section My personal experiences and see if someone out there is experiencing similar problem.

According to the article 'St. John's Wort FAQ's' an Australian brand called Procare Hypericum 1000 is recommended.

Thanks for replying to my message. As I was impatient I visited my doctor and asked for a good SJW brand. She suggested that I try Blackmores . I am currently trying them. I hope they are going to work for me.

I have been doing quite a bit of research into St. Johns Wort of late as I was prescribed Zoloft by my GP. I couldn't hack the effects of Zoloft so I am going to give SJW a bash. Blackmores, Cenovis and Natural Nutrition are the most availiable brands for myself. Natural Nutrition has a warning on the lid saying that SJW may effect in the same way as some prescribed medicines do. I think I'm going to try Blackmores first, then Natural Nutrition if Blackmores is not the answer. They cost around the same $14-$18 but you get 50 tab's with NN and 40 tab's with B. Good luck everyone
