"5HTP & EMS" , Fri 15 Apr 09:58

Hi,

Has anybody continued taking 5HTP in spite of joint pains. I wonder if the pain goes away after a while.

I have been suffering from chronic insomnia for almost two years. My sleep pattern has changed. I don't have difficulty falling into sleep but I wake up after midnight and can't fall back into sleep for 2 to 3 hours. It is very frustrating.

I think I have mild depression too. My family doctor prescribed me Celexa, Zolofot. I hated the side effects. While I was on Celexa, I got Serotonin Syndrome. Rapid heart beat, restlessness, insomnia, nausea, I felt my head was expanding as soon as I increased my dosage from 10 to 20mg. I stopped taking them but my family doctor suggested that I stay on 10 mg for 3 weeks this time before going to 20. "Could not you have said it at first"???I thought with myself

Anyway, I tried 5HTP. It was amazing that my mood changed 180 in a matter of few hours. I took one in the afternoon and another 50mg at bedtime. I felt at peace, no worry about the future. I took it for 3 days, my mood had significantly changed but my sleep did not change a bit. On my fourth day, i had a foggy head, but I started to experience joint pain in my fingers and knees. I also had muscle cramps on my right tigh and left abdomen.

I tried to do some research and I came up with this site
http://www.nemsn.org/disc2_frm.htm

I want to know if anybody had severe muscle pain by taking 5HTP, because I really want to give it another shot. I may start on a lower dosage, but I am scared what it causes EMS symptoms due to the contamination in the supplement.

I think 5HTP is converted into Serotonin in our blood and cause all the problems with guts, or it might cause inflamatory reaction in joints. Does anybody take their 5HTP with the active form of vitamin b6(p5p). I have heard that it lowers the side effects because it allows the 5htp be absorobed more easily into the brain.

Thank you and I wish if I have never been in this mess called depression

I had not slept good for 10 years. I was up at 4am each day and could not go back to sleep. I read an article on fish oil and began to use it. After about 4-6 weeks i began to sleep better and now after 6 months i am sleeping all nite. This is my story i do not know how it will work for others.

Life is good!!!?!

I put a capsule in a bottle of water and sip it over an hour. I heard it is a better way of taking htp. Apparently if taken in one big dose the body can't uptake it all and some of it is dumped in the liver. Sorry can't help with the aches..

Thanks for the reply. I have stopped taking them. I think 150 mg/day was a kind of too much for the start. I took 3 50 capsules for the first two days at different times.
