Anyone here taken either of these for a long time and had success (no poop-out or stomach problems)? I'm also wondering if this would give you the same kind of apathy and amotivation that the SSRI medications can cause?
Thanks, Kara

I've taken 5-HTP and experienced *some* poop-out, but the cure seems to be to drop to a low dose (or go off it) for a few weeks to a month and then start using it again. No stomach problems, but I could probably eat portland cement and not get indigestion (lucky, I guess).
As far as amotivational stuff -- it does act similarly to SSRI antidepressants in that although it keeps you from going too low, it also seems to prevent you from feeling too good. Most antidepressants are like this, there's no escaping the fact that the ability to feel good/bad are connected and it's hard to block one without blocking the other. The only one that hasn't had that "flattening" effect for me has been Wellbutrin (in combination with B-complex and Sam-e it's even better). But that one is not for people with panic/anxiety issues.

Hi,
I tried 5-HTP in conjunction with SJW for anxiety & mild depression (but mainly anxiety) and had stomach problems. Now taking L-tryptophan which I've had mixed results with. But I've recently concluded that when I take about 4 grams (gets expensive!) the results are good, and anxiety diminishes... And I've found as I've increased the Tryptophan and got less anxious I gerenally feel more motivated not less.

Hey Alien
How long have you been taking Tryptophan? I've been taking 5HTP with a reduced antidepressant dose and it worked great for 3 weeks but now I'm depressed again and am so tempted to go back on my original dose of Effexor. However I've ordered Tryptophan and want to give that a go so was wondering how it works long term. Thanks.

Hi, I've been taking it for about 6 months. I started with 500mg which didn't really seem to do anything, then increased to about 2.5 g per day. In combination with SJW, inositol & B vitamins (essential to take a B complex at least, though I add B3 & 6 as well) this seems to help, but it has been up and down. It's helped more with mood than anxiety, and I've had stages where it doesn't seem to be working that well at all and other periods where it's been great. Overall though it's definitely improved things, but I think the higer dose is the way to go. Shame it's so expensive though! :(

Hi, Thanks for your response. I read a post from someone who has used pharmaceutical grade 5-htp and she said it is a lot better than the regular stuff - longer lasting effect and less stomach trouble. As for tryptophan, it's cheaper if you order it in bulk and then put it into capsules yourself. I think that BeyondACentury.com might have good bulk prices for tryptophan.

I made a mistake in my previous post here. BeyondACentury.com doesn't carry tryptophan. They have 5-htp in bulk form though. Sorry.
