I had one day of bad stomach cramps recently (including gas/bloating) that I'm pretty sure was caused by 5-HTP... I probably overdid it the last several days before that. Otherwise, if I stick to around 100MG/day near bedtime (my current dose) I have no problems. My usual brand is Now Foods, from iHerb.com. They use pharmaceutical grade 5-HTP, which may help.

Hey DawnMichelle

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well. Check out this site on 5HTP written by Dr. Ray Sahelian http://www.raysahelian.com/5htp.html . He recommends 5HTP and also sells it but advises that doses higher than 50 mg per day can cause nausea etc.

Hope this helps.

5-HTP causes stomach problems for some people. I took it for a few months before having any problems, and then it came on so bad I was convinced it must be a bug, but no it was definitely the 5-HTP- when I stopped taking them it went away. I tried another just to be sure, and got 12 hours of stomach cramps to prove the point :(

That was only 50 mg too!

Apparently the reason is 5-HTP can convert to serotonin in the stomach before it gets to the brain, causing upset...
