"5-HPT" , Wed 19 Jan 08:07

I am on Paxil Cr 12.5 mgs. Does anyone take this along with 5-HPT? Has there been any success? I would like to try this, I have been on anti-depressants for over 2 years and because of the bad side effects I get from the meds, I have been switched about 7 times, it has been so many that I lost count. Paxil CR seems to be working. I also get bad anxiety spells, it can happen anytime, anywhere. So I am interested in finding a way to be off of anti-depressants if there is an natural way of doing it.

Thanks.

Heya serr

I've also suffered from depression and anxiety.

I've been taking Effexor 150 mg daily for 18 months now and have currently started taking 50mg of 5HTP WITH this after checking if this was OK with my doctor. I've been taking the 5HTP for 1.5 weeks now. My goal is to cut back to 75mg Effexor in a week's time and eventually like you to totally wean off and just use 5HTP. However, if this doesn't work I'm not going to go off my AD as it's been really great overall.

Here's the GOOD news. Since taking 5HTP I've never felt better!! Don't know if you're a woman but even though the Effexor has been good, around my PMS time I still get very depressed and become a different person. However, since being on 5HTP and my AD I feel better now than at the BEST times of the month. I seriously noticed a difference within 1 day of taking it. I've heard people sometimes feel a difference with 1-2 hours! But it can take up to 1-3 weeks to work so everybody is different.

All I can say is I feel like I've found a total breakthrough and as I wean down my AD dose I'll up the dose of 5HTP. I'll let you know how I go. All the best with your endeavours too but for me I can't speak highly enough of 5HTP and yes it is safe to take with an AD contrary to many people's advice. My doctor in fact recommended I do this and for some people the combination is actually the answer rather than just being on and AD or 5HTP so keep an open mind and as I'm sure you know by now just experiment and see what works for you. Cheers!!

Hi Smilin Suzie

Thank you for your response. It is good to hear this. I will check with my doctor and see it this is okay before I take this. I am a woman and I also PMS very badly! Supposedly Paxil CR helps with this and I am still waiting for it to help me. Last month I still had a bad time, we'll see this month.

Take care.
Maria

Suzi, what brand of 5-HTP are you using? Are you only taking 50mg once a day?

Hi LL,

I'm using Sangster's standardized 5HTP. And yes, so far I'm only taking 50 mg a day in the afternoon around 1:30. When I go down to 75 mg Effexor I will see how I feel though as I may have to increase the dose to 100 mg once a day or even twice to three times/day.

Hope this helps.
Cheers

I just wanted to add that the problem with combining 5-htp and SSRIs is that too much serotonin can cause serotonin syndrome. Combining them is only ok if you're not on high dosages of both at the same time. If you're taking high dosages of both, the results can be life threatening.

That said, I'm glad to hear that you're doing so well. That's really inspiring. I'm trying to make the decision of whether to go back on Effexor, try 5-htp or something else. My anxiety has really gotten bad now that I'm off of medication. I will be very interested in seeing how you fare in the long-term on the 5-htp.

Take care and good luck.

Kara
