Hey guys some advice here.
Last night I got Natrol 5-HTP. I took 100mg, unbenknowest that it could (seemingly) be so strong...
I've never taken an anti-depressant before, well Paxil for about two weeks a few years ago. Otherwise, I have not taken anything that directly works with serotonin.
I took 100mg at about 7pm. All I can say is "thank God" I did not take 150mg. The first few hours were okay; I noticed a jump in alertness and concentration, and energy. I was pretty surprised it was taking such an effect. The problem is, as the hours went on, so did the level of serotonin in my brain and body (at least that's the vague concept that was going through my head). Bottom line, I didn't get to bed 'till about 3-4AM, and those were miserable, miserable hours. Complete racing thoughts, no ability to lye down and sleep... But, that wasn't the bad part; it was just mass-nausua up the wazoo. I could barely walk without feeling like I was going to puke. My body felt like it was going 170%. I felt, for lack of a better description, way too drunk.
When I woke up this morning, it was even worse. That was about 7:00am. I called in sick, because there was no way in Hell I was going to be working like this. (I did call in sick without any hesitent anxiety, however; something that would not have occured before). Basically, I must have went in and out of consciousness 20-30 times before finally getting up for good at about 4pm (it's 4:45 right now). That was a terribly, terribly miserable time...
Now, here's my question; right now, I still have a slight migraine, but I can certainly tell there's still an effect going on as far as what 5HTP worked on. I feel energetic, alert, confident; essentially what it claims to do. I bared with the side effects during that whole experience merely because I really knew deep down I simply overloaded my body with too high a dose... I'd read several times it's best to start at 50mg for a week then go up, but I didn't listen because taking something like two SJW at a time never produced such effects (positive or negative).
Tonight, I'm not going to take anything. I feel my body definitely needs more rest. It's New Years Eve too, which is unfortunate, but oh well. I'm fairly excited to have something that works thus far. The question is, would you recommend I simply start at 50mg tomorrow morning (or afternoon, whenever I feel ready)? I would almost opt for going 25mg, but it's a capsule and can't be cut in half...
Anyway, despite the terrible experience, I'll keep trying, because I believe the fault was my own. If 100mg is more akin to say Paxil100mg, then there is no way in hell I should have taken that much... And, if that's the case, 25mg would seem like the most logical answer for me personally, twice throughout the day...
So yeah, anybody who could give me some advice, I'd really appreciate it (sorry for the long post).
~Jason

When I first tried 5-HTP I took the Natrol brand too. Had a very similar reaction to what you had. Fortunately, I only took 50 mgs. one afternoon, so it didn't really bother my sleep. However, I was very nauseated, had to run to the bathroom every 30 minutes and felt anxious. Didn't take any more after that.
After reading several posts on this forum, I discovered a different brand called Nature's Way. Its enteric coated so it doesn't cause stomach problems or nausea and I haven't had any anxiety on it. Just the opposite. So far, I feel pretty good. I'm taking 100 mgs a day at this point, in the morning. These come with B6 and vitamin C added. I guess that helps in the absorption process. Anyway, you can go to iherb.com to buy them.
Good luck! Karen

Hi Jason I started 5htp @ 5 weeks ag. 50mg x 2 daily 1 am and 1 pm I did suffer horrible headaches and if I took the pm one too late horrible nightmares. I suffered with the headaches for about 2 weeks and then they stopped. I also stopped the evening pill and just have one 50mg in the morning. I also have found though if you drink alchol (it states less than 6 hours) the effects are intensified (I was drunk on 2 glasses of wine - quite cheap night out but not good). I find that this type of pill works on depression anxiety and panic attacks as it calms you down. Too many pills though and I found I was too calm and falling asleep. I think its important to get the dosage correct for yourself. It is no good for depression that is subdued as you will be asleep for days. I would keep on talking them as I have suffered from depression for over 12 years and have tried the majority of prescription anti-depressants with no luck. These have worked wonders in weeks. Good Luck - Joanne

I must say I was taking Natures Way 5-HTP with no problems for months, then suddenly had major cramps & nausea so I had to stop it. I think for some with more sensitive stomachs, 5-HTP is not ideal. Apparently Serotonin is also a neurotransmitter in the gut as well, and with 5-HTP unlike L-tryptophan, the risk is it can convert to serotonin in the gut (ie before it gets to the brain where it's needed..) which causes stomach upset.

BTW I was taking 50 mg per day.
By all means try the Natures Way. I'm sure it helped me for a while. But if you keep getting stomach problems I would stop.
