Those of you who take this supplement, would you please tell me how many milligrams you take with each dosing? Explain at what time of the day/night you take each dose. I just started taking this last night. I'm using NOW brand 100mg capsules. I am not sure how many times a day to take them.

Hi Laurielu-

I have tried taking varying amounts of 5-HTP on various schedules, and in my particular case I get the best results from 25 mg (only have a capsule) of Natrol brand 5-HTP. However, I take many other things, including a full daily dose of SJW. If I had to depend solely on 5-HTP (which I wouldn't want to do- it doesn't cover all my issues), my dosage would be higher.

25 mg, an hour before bed, helps me wake up more refreshed in the morning and seems to remove a mental "dingy" feeling that SJW leaves if I take it alone. 25 mg may not sound like much, but if I don't take it, I REALLY feel the difference. I have read several times that different people's "window" of effective dosage for 5-HTP can vary widely and be as specific as within 25 mg. If I take higher doses of 5-HTP, it has an opposite effect- disturbing my sleep, like my brain cannot "let go" for the sleeping process.

I am currently taking:

AT THE START OF BREAKFAST:
1 SJW (GNC brand standardized)
1 Saw palmetto (for prostate, GNC brand)
1 Siberian ginseng (Paradise Herbs brand)
1 Centrum (multivitamin)
1/4 tablet B-vitamin complex (sublingual from Source Naturals)
1 cup of coffee (after breakfast)

AT THE START OF LUNCH:
1 SJW
500 mg Vitamin C with bioflavinoids (Source Naturals brand)
2 g Fish oil (Carlson brand Super Omega-3)

AT THE START OF DINNER:
1 SJW
1 Saw palmetto
500 mg Vitamin C with bioflavinoids
1 g Fish oil

ONE HOUR BEFORE BED:
25 mg 5-HTP (Natrol brand)
750 mg (1 capsule) Ashwagandha (Jarrow/AOR brand)
1/4 tablet B-vitamin complex

My underlying issues resulted from neurological damage from being vegan (100% vegetarian) several years ago.

Hi, I'm vegan but seem to have trouble every few years and I go back to eating meat for a few weeks. It doesn't seem to help too much - can you tell me what problems you experienced and how you know you have neurological damage? If you wouldn't mind sharing with me - I'm concerned with my vegan diet mainly because I've never had a great appetite and I'm pretty much on my own with it and I would so appreciate any signs to watch out for that I'm damaging myself.
Thank you in advance,
Jenny

Thanks H20Buffalo for taking the time to type out your schedule. I'm glad I'm not the only one taking a zillion supplements each day. I tried the SJW and it made me extremely sleepy. I didn't notice much difference in my depression or anxiety. I am really hoping 5-HTP is my answer. I'm gonna stick to taking 100mg at breakfast and 100mg at bedtime. I do notice my sleep is uninterrupted and deep. That is a good thing.
