Topic Title: Why do 5-htp brands vary in effectiveness?
| | "Why do 5-htp brands vary in effectiveness?" , Fri 10 Dec 11:19
After years of trying varous brands I've finally settled on Doctor's Best. For some reason 5-htp brands vary widely in effectiveness. Some actually make me feel sick (NOW), and some help, but are just not effective enough (Jarrow). But I never realized the power of 5-htp until I found the Doctor's Best brand (at least it works great for me).
Does anyone know why there is so much variance with different brands?
I think it's important to note that if you don't have success with a certain brand you should try another. Like I stated above, the NOW brand makes me have intense dreams and literally makes me feel sick the longer I take it. But who knows they might work great for you. This supplement is pretty crazy in that way and that must be pointed out.

quality control varies from company to company. its possible that some companies don't even put 5-htp in their 5-htp products or just a very small percentage of the stated dose. trick is finding a source you can trust.

In my opinion, if these different brands use pharmaceutical grade 5-HTP (e.g. Now Foods, which I use without problems) and you're still getting varying effects, it's probably the placebo effect.
Nobody likes to hear "it's all in your head" but I just don't see any other explanation that makes sense. 5-HTP is 5-HTP, as long as it's the same grade and purity of stuff. Unlike St. John's Wort (where amounts of ingredients can vary widely between brands), 5-HTP *is* the ingredient.
