Topic Title: 5-HTP and Pregnancy

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had experience of using 5-HTP during pregnancy?
Having suffered from severe depression and insomnia for a large part of my life, I was thrilled to find 5-HTP a few years ago. I took 50mg a day for the best part of two years which basically transformed me into a much happier person.
Then last August (2003), I became pregnant and stopped taking the medication immediately for fear of any damage it might do to my unborn child. Basically my son was born in May this year and while he is physically and mentally well, he has a very prominent birthmark down the centre of his face. I have not stopped worrying since he was born that somehow the 5-HTP was still in my system and caused this defect.
I would be grateful if anyone has any information on this subject.

Hi Mele, I been taking 5htp for a number of years now to help me sleep at night, I kept taking it while i was pregnant and right up till i gave birth i was getting a wonderful 9-10 hours sleep a night. I've continued taking it while i am breast feeding and have noted no ill effects in my baby. In fact i have a wonderful little girl who's development and motor skills are right on track if not a bit early she sleeps 9-10 hours a night and has done since she was 2 months and has no problem having 3-4 naps during the day after having feeds where i haven't been taking 5htp. I hope this helps you out. Kristi

Kristi (or anyone else who breastfeeds while on 5-htp) PLEASE email me at [email protected]. I am currently dealing with anxiety and depression which was so much better when I was on it, just nervous about taking it while nursing. Thanks!!!
