No really bad ones, but there are a few that you'll probably notice. Think of a milder version of what you get from SSRI antidepressants... possible anxiety, some change in sleep (most people say they sleep better & more heavily), nausea for some people.
In my case I get some heart palpitations, but I haven't heard of this one being common. I'm taking at least 200mg/day, on some days 300mg so maybe palpitations are more common with a relatively high dose.
IMHO the results are *well* worth the side effects, but your mileage may vary. Depends on how bad you want to get out of the funk you're in, vs. tolerating some side effects. Most seem to go away pretty quick. I still get mild heart palpitations and occasional agitation but nothing serious.
P.S. I'd start with 50mg/day as most brands recommend, but don't stop there... gradually increase to 100mg/day, then 150mg, etc. until it's working to your satisfaction.

I don't mean to butt in here, but I too have noticed I am having more and more heart palpitations. Mine actually get pretty strong and are very aggravating. I have the low end of high blood pressure (does that make sense) and was kinda worried about mixing 5 HTP with the blood pressure. I have only taken 150 mg a day max so far. What do ya think...it kinda scares me!

I'm not a doctor (or expert on 5-HTP really), but my guess is it's probably because of anxiety caused by the 5-HTP rather than directly related. However, if it gets really bad I'd discontinue the 5-HTP and see a doctor.

Yep, I had to stop the 5-htp because of heart palpitations as well. I noticed that after falling asleep, I would wake up with a racing heart and having to catch my breath. THis was only taking 50 mg's, so I wasn't on a high dose.

Just a quick note, I took 50mg of this stuff for 3 or 4 days, and developed some very persistent heart palpitations..... started to mellow, but I still have them after stopping for 3 weeks..... I did try some Lexapro for a few days also after stopping the 5-HTP, but had to stop because of the increased palps..... also tried some St. Johns wort for 2 days, increased the palps again.... I believe that the 5-htp caused not only the original palps, but a continueing sensitivity to any similar stuff,,, what a pain in the neck!! Have anxiety and depression, take a "cure" and get heart palps, feel like I am going to keel over!! Seems to work for many, but IMHO... AVOID this stuff!! Valerian root is pretty good for anxiety if U can stand the smell.... peace
