Topic Title: Negative side-effect of 5-HTP
| | "Negative side-effect of 5-HTP" , Thu 28 Oct 01:49
I have started taking 5-HTP. About a week now. Take 50mg before bedtime, however, past 3 nights have suddenly woken up at 2 or 3 in morning. My eyes suddenly "pop open" and normal nights sleep is interrupted. I view this as a negative side effect. Should I take the dosage in the morning in order to avoid this. Has any one else experienced such an unwanted side effect. In research I read, only 2% reported side-effect of insomnia.

I started taking Amoryn a week ago. Before I was taking Kira and it worked very well for me. I have never suffered from insomnia in the past but since starting to take Amoryn, which is St. John's Wort mixed with 5 HTP, B vitamins, vitamin D, folic acid and selenium, I have not slept in 1 week. I wake up during the night and before I could have gone back to sleep but now I just cannot. I get palpitations and even if I take a sleeping tablet I cannot sleep. Then during the day you are so tired, irritable and depressed. Hence I am stopping Amroyn immediately due to these undesired side effects. This never happened with Kira which is just St. John's Wort alone, maybe it is the 5 HTP in Amoryn that caused the insomnia.

I have tried MANY SSRI's, no heart palpitations, tried 5-HTP, got them BIG time and really consistent after just a few days.... plus they seem to linger on and on.... I vote avoid! Peace

I've gotten this exact side effect with SSRI antidepressants, which makes me think it's a side effect of increased serotonin. IME it should go away if you stick with the 5-HTP for awhile.
