Topic Title: Possible dangers of 5 HTP

I did some research on 5 HTP on the web and so far I have seen mostly negative feedback. There were 2 websites in particular: www.raysahelian.com/5-htp.html and www.wholehealthmd.com/refshelf/substances_view/1,1525,747,00 . html one of the things that was mentioned which was that you should consult your doctor before combining 5 HTP with St. John's wort and it may not be good to take with vitamin B6. Then what about Amoryn, which combines both? Has anyone heard anything to this affect and what are your personal experiences with 5 HTP and St. John's wort combined?

I was taking 5-HTP together with SJW a while back. I had major problems, although I don't think it was anything to do with the SJW, but the 5-HTP. It seemed to do some good for a while but after about 2-3 months I got serious stomach upset from it, which lasted several weeks on and off (I didn't connect it with 5-HTP initially, once I did make the connection and stopped taking it, the symptoms vanished)
Apparently stomach upset is a common side effect, and I think it's due to Serotonin being a neurotransmitter in the stomach as well as the brain. I gather the risk with 5-HTP is that being one step closer to serotonin that the Amino Acid L-Trytophan it can convert to Serotonin in the blood before it gets to the brain. Just how harmful this is I'm not sure, but I know I couldn't continue taking it. I now take L-tryptophan with no side effects...
