Topic Title: experience with 1st night of 5-htp

I have been successfully taking SJW for two months with great benefits BUT I have been having problems with a rash/acne on my neck from the SJW. I KNOW it's from the SJW because I've never had this before and it started the week of my use of SJW. I'm guessing I am allergic to something in it. I've tried two different brands and still have the problem SO I decided to try 5-htp instead. Last night before bed I took my first dose of 100 mg's of 5-htp. I feel like I may have had a strange reaction. My throat got sore about a few hours later (very dry and scratchy) and I honestly felt like I was having heart palpitations. I did fall asleep and slept very well... almost too well. ha! I had very vivid dreams all night long and when I woke up ( over 9 hours later!), I found myself slobbering all over my pillow. THe only times in my life I ever woke up slobbering was after a seriously HARD sleep. So it definitely helped my insomnia. ha ha. I'm just curious about the sore throat and palpitations. Maybe I should decrease the dosage to 50 mgs?

just saw this post... I had severe heart palpitations on 5-HTP after just a few days.... I still get them 3 weeks later, but have tried St johns wort since then... some say to increase dosage, but not this lad, I have had enough... side effects of Prozac/Celexa were mild in comparison!! Peace

I'd titrate the dosage up slowly... use 50mg for a week or so, then go to 100mg (two 50's at different times of the day) for a week, then three 50's... try staying there for awhile & see if that's enough.
The way I look at it, 5-HTP is not going to be side-effect free... anything that's actually effective in treating depression is likely to have side effects, and a person has to be willing to put up with side effects for awhile (many/most of them go away eventually).
Best of luck to ya...
