Topic Title: beginning 5-htp

I am new to this site. I have severe depression and severe obsessive thoughts and panic attacks. I've been off the SSRI meds for a year. I just started 5htp at 50 mgs 3xs per day. I noticed within 12 hours of taking the meds, I had the same side effects as the SSRIs. My pupils were extremely dialated, my resting heart rate increased 15-20 beats per minute, my rapid and excessive sweating in the gym also returned. I'm worried that if these side effects returned so quickly, the negative sexual side effects will also return. My questions are, Did anyone else experience the return of SSRI symptoms so soon after taking their first dose? and has anyone experienced sexual side effects from 5htp? Finally, is there any supplements that can reverse the sexual side effects of 5htp if they occur? Thank you.

Hey, just stick with it a little while. They do say that you can experience mild sexual side effects at high doses around 700mg and higher I read and you're nowhere near that. Are you sure that the excessive sweating is related to th 5htp. It could be though, but just asking. ANyways the 5htp is suppose to have much milder side effects that the SSRIs. SOme people respond better to 5htp. Some people respond better to St Johns WOrt, and some people respond better to the combination of both, but I believe most people respond best to the Antidepressants prescribed by your doctor, but some people experience too many side effects and want to try something different. YOu just have to give it some time too see what works best for you.

Hi there. I have been taking 5-HTP for a little over a month and the only side effect I had was slight constipation when I was taking 3 50mg caplets per day. When I decreased my dose to 2 per day, that went away. Luckily I haven't experienced any other side effects. Best of luck to you though!
