"5htp, general questions." , Tue 13 Jul 18:02

I have had vertigo since September due to an inner ear problem but lately I have been feeling sensitivity to light and sound and my head is always killing me. My doctor says these are all parts of the inner ear problem but that I shouldn't be able to recognize them and because I can, that I have low serotonin levels. I also have moderate OCD and some anxiety. I can't say that I've really been depressed but maybe a little. Anyway, he prescribed me with Lexapro because I refused the Paxil but after researching a little about the Lexapro, I don't want to take that either! I don't feel like I will need these drugs for my whole life, as I am only 21 but since they have such horrible withdrawal symptoms I refuse to take them, nevermind the initial side effects! Those SSRI's just seem like a nightmare to me. So I have been considering the 5htp. I just wanted to ask what the major side effects of this supplement are, if any...and if there are any withdrawal effects if I stop taking it. I am emetaphobic, which means I am afraid of vomiting so I need to avoid any severe nausea as a side-effect. But I really want to find something that can help. Are there any ways to raise your serotonin levels w/o supplements or medication? Because I'm also in therapy but I don't know if that will help or not... Sorry for all the info but I am in desperate need of some help...I haven't felt myself for a year and I can't take it!! Thanks for any responses!!!

I've been taking 5htp for 3 weeks. The side effects for me were similar to all the SSri meds I tooK. These include drowsiness, increased perspiration, blurred vision, and slight stomach and intestinal distrurbance. Good luck.
