Hi Everybody,
I recently gave up on SJW after taking Perika for 2 1/2 months and seeing no positive effects. In fact, during that time, I became increasingly more obsessive and worrisome in my thinking, and I'm wondering if this was due to the SJW. I've posted my detailed experience in the "Experiences" section in case you're interested. I've decided to stop SJW and switch to 5-HTP. I've started at 150 mg/day of the Vitamin Shoppe brand, which has Vitamin B-6 in it too. I've read some creepy things about how taking B-6 with 5-HTP is bad, but I don't know if I should believe them. Anyway, I've decided to give 5-HTP a try, and hope that it works better than SJW did. I'll keep you all posted.

Hi. Just stumbled across this forum and I haven't read what it's about yet but thought I had to reply to this msg. I started taking SJW and 5HTP for obsessive stuff and mild depression. I gave up the SJW after 2 months and have now been on the 5HTP for nearly 2 months and it's really working (I think it's the 5HTP anyway!). I'm also taking multi vits which have B6 in them and am a bit concerned by your post. If anyone has any info, it's would be gratefully received. Thanks Seb

Hi there...I'm so glad to hear that you're having good luck with 5-HTP--that gives me hope for myself. I should clarify what I read about taking 5-HTP with Vitamin B6. B6 is needed to convert 5-HTP to serotonin, and I've read in a couple of places that it may not be good to take the two together (either in the same pill or by taking a multivitamin/B supplement along with the 5-HTP) because then the conversion to serotonin happens too quickly, before the 5-HTP can cross the blood-brain barrier. Apparently, serotonin itself is too big to cross it so ideally you'd want 5-HTP to enter the brain and be converted there, not outside the brain, where too much serotonin can be harmful (serotonin syndrome). However, I have also read that this is nothing to worry about, because thousands of people have taken 5-HTP with good results, and that it would be crazy to starve yourself of B6 on puprose to get 5-HTP to enter the brain. I don't know what to believe, but the latter argument makes a lot of sense so I'm going to keep taking my 5-HTP/B6 supplement and see what happens. I will keep you updated. Continued good luck to you too!
